Dreams that involved you fighting or your inability to connect a punch
I am sure I am not the only one who has dreams like these but when I have dreams of me fighting I can't connect my punches. It's either that or when it does connect there is no power with the punch at the moment of impact. I used to have dreams like these back in the day. The only other MA I studied in the past was TKD when I was a kid (who didn't right?!?!?) and then soon in my late teens Muay Thai. Supposedly these dreams were signs of aggression, however they were also signs of low confidence and fear.
However since I started training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, my dreams took a complete 180. In my dreams I found myself without fear and aggression but more so on sustaining peace, but keeping a firm grip on confidence. The moves went from throwing punches and kicks to restraining my assailant in the moves I have learned and to not worry of the outcome except thinking of momentary safeness.
My last dream(last night actually) I had was me having an altercation with 5 random guys in a parking lot. I remember the main guy was like the head guy of the 4 other guys. I had some choice words and he lunged at me with a knife in his left hand. I remembered grabbing his left forearm with my right hand, and he got on top mount position trying to stab me. In my dream I felt a small bit of fear until something clicked my mind and the fear turned into calmness.
Something in my mind told me "you've been in this position before, now escape...." I then started to slide my left knee from under him and then soon my right knee. I realized I was pulling guard. I still had control of him in guard position while maintaining stability with my right arm on his left forearm from sticking me with his knife. In the back of my mind I can hear the 4 other guys edging their friend to stab me. What seemed like 30 secs of thinking of my next move, I decided to open up my guard and take a chance. I positioned my left foot on his hip, I shrimp out on left side and then soon after my right foot on the other side of his hip and I extended my legs as if to push him up and off. As I pushed him I let go of his right arm and used my left hand to help control my right arm which had been controlling his left forearm (knife hand). He ended up landing on his stomach and immediately i turned his left arm counter clock-wise. It looked like an armbar, but because he landed on his stomach the armbar would not be effective. So while he laid on his stomach I sat up a bit and turned the arm bar into a variation of a kimura.
It was then in my dream I realized I had full control. Next thing I knew the 4 other friends of his decided they want to step in and help their friend. I told them "one more step and I break his arm" one of the guys said "if you break it I got 20 guys ready to stomp your face in." Now normally in my other dreams I would feel threatened and scared. But because I was in the position I was in, and the fact that it was a dream. the guy's arm I was about to break told the friends to back off, and before I knew it I woke up

You are dealing with complex issues that are being resolved through your dreams.
Is this a good thing or bad thing? I mean I haven't had a dream that involved fighting since my early 20's. This is the first ever dream I had that my current training had been properly used and was effective.

im 27, and i still have weird dreams like that every now and then. ive had dreams, of fighting in the age, or just outside the bar. but ya, its like there is just no power in your strikes. it feels like you completely miss the guy, even though you watch yourself, punch him in the face.
i dont think it has to do with any confidence issues or whatever. proly more to do with the fact, that while you are flailing away in your sleep, there is nothing to connect with in front of you. so you feel that in your dream too. same as when you hear sounds while youre sleeping, and your dream incorporates those sounds. like a phone ringing.
I think that your thinking so much of the moves that you have learned, and feel very confident that somehow they get incorporated in your dreams. How long have you taken Jiu Jitsu?
As far as the TKD and the punches not landing.....I'm thinking it's the way we had practiced this martial art. In Jiu Jitsu were always in close combat and actually finishing moves off as in a real fight. In TKD were throwing punches/kicking in the air and mostly training this way. Even when we spar, more then half the time our opponent is moving backwards, so more then half our punches/kicks are not landing. This is my opinion. That's why I think that in your dream your punches are not landing and or have no power.
I used to get these types of dreams too, but they usually go away after a good vacation must be the stress, the dreams are less than years ago (in my fighting for stupid reasons years) the dreams back then were constantly.

Just under a month @ 2x a week class. On my off days I go to the gym and practice solo drills, warmups, and whatever i learned the day before to keep the moves fresh in my mind. Being that i have a 5 month old boy at home its sometimes hard to get 2 classes in so i only get 1 class instead. I suppose its better than nothing right. I am currently trying to find some good mats i can buy to put in my basement so i can train on the weekends or in the evenings that i am unable to make class. Otherwise i practice what i last remembered over and over to attain muscle memory.
