the struggles of a southpaw..
.. not that bad of a struggleany ways just looking for some advice. i have about a year of boxing experience, im a natural left handed southpaw and did not struggle with it while boxing since my class was pretty small and i spent most of the time working 1 on 1 with my trainer. now that im in muay thai since im in a bigger class im not able to get that individual attention (not blaming my teacher, he helps as much as he possibly can.. but since im the only southpaw its kinda hard for him to teach me totally separate from the class) i have a real hard time following everything the teacher is doing so i have an idea.. .. .. i practice regular stance in my spare time and have caught on really well, so should i just stand regular in class? and take what i learn and go south paw when i train alone.. i want to keep southpaw as my strong point but i think if i can fight well both stances that could be a good thing too.. anyways, i appreciate any advice

IMO, stay a southpaw and develop a good straight left. IIRC ODH is a southpaw that boxes conventional.

I'm a righty that fights southpaw. I love training both right and left. Better overall fighter....

Since southpaw is your natural stance....you should improve your orthodox stance. Like a switch hitter in baseball, you can throw your opponents off by switching stance. |

why work on a different stance when you haven't perfected the first? it doesn't make any sense.

Sure it does Stu. How many people 'perfect' either stance anyway? Why not be well rounded? I'll always be better southpaw IMO, but if I'm in a situation that it benefits me to go righty, I'm ready.

it seems that when i fight my buddys (a kickboxer and b.j.j. guy) im more effective when i can switch it up, and the better i have gotten orthodox its really been showing..expecially when im throwing knees in my combos.. but i do feel southpaw benefits me most so it will always be my main focus point. the reason i want to mess with it a bit is it seems really natural to me, i dont feel to awkward switching back and forth although im for sure 100% stronger southpaw
