This is a good quote IMO.
"The bottom line is you don't control your fate when you ride a motorcycle. You may think you do, but you don't, and the experts and the statistics bear that out. You are putting your life in the hands of strangers, hoping they see you, hoping they react to you. I've seen some awful stuff in my life but none worse than the motorcyclist who was run over by a tow truck. I was not even at the hospital - I passed the accident on the way to work. The medical teams were on the scene, however the wreck must have just happened as there were long bloody streaks with large pieces of skin (unidentifiable body parts) among the mass. It was horrendous and it nearly gave me nightmares." For those of you who choose to ride bikes, stay safe.

As one of many MC riders on this forum, I guess we all take our chances every single time we go out and ride. It's the once who chooses to take the un-necessary chances that most likely will end up like the pictures in that site. Same once who get on a brand new sport bike, or any other kind of bike for that matter, and fail to respect the capabilities of the machine. Thanks Jeffie, for reminding us all that when you take certain things for granted, it can quickly end up in a disaster.

I love to ride and this site makes me feel better that every time i move my bike, i gear up from head to toe. It is true that riding is dangerous, but alot of it is the cagers not caring. Most of what is left is the dumb squidly type goen way to fast and end up hitting something.
I take it easy and predict what people may do, if i see anything goen south, i back out and get away. But alot again is cagers on phones and **** and not giving a damn. It is obvious because the number of people who die in wrecks has risen. Since motorcycles are now "fashionable" everyone thinks they can ride. And since sport bikes are the fashion now, it is really bad. They are super fast and many people dont understand what the machines are capable of. Sport bikes are almost 100% the same as its counterpart race bike. Also, you get many stupid, squidly types together (read motorcycle club/gang) and they culminate in doing really stupid shits. Why is it that a racing machine has somehow become a stunt machine that it was not made to do. I mean would you take a Z into the baja 1000 or some dirt track race. Or use a ratchet to scramble eggs or something. thing are made generally for a specific purpose and then you try to use them for something they weren't, some problems will arise. And all you see on TV anymore is these stupid **** stunting sportbikes and not for what they are made for. God damn it. Last edited by therock2689; 06-08-2008 at 09:45 PM. |

Good site. Everyone should check it out.
What's really bad are the riders who are fully geared, yet turn out to be a pile of gear and dismembered organs! I'm sure most drivers are incompetent, and 20% make random lane changes with no concept of passing. I can't say riding a bike is a good idea, even though I'm doing it now. I fully admit it's the worst idea I've ever carried out. But it's so fun. Here's my thinking, after reading and thinking about it for the last few weeks. - Don't forget that some drivers are just BLIND. Yes, blind. They cheated on the DMV test, or used special glasses they might not even be wearing when they run you over. This girl at work can't even read large signs WITH HER GLASSES ON for example. I mean freaking large signs. And I know a few people who cheated in high school, one of which who has been in MANY accidents. - Wear a bright red, yellow, orange, or green jacket and sit upright. Cars that turn left or right (usually left) in front of you just don't see you. I think that's because (1) the single headlight appears to be a far away car instead of a close bike, and (2) the front of the bike is so low-profile that it can be disregarded by the driver's autonomic visual analysis. Apparently the color of the bike doesn't even matter. But bright jackets do. If you're riding a bike that requires you to hug it, you're kind of screwed here. - Wear a white helmet, maybe with a gold or blue mirror visor even. This is even better than a bright color, I think, because people think "cop." So it makes them check you out to see if you're a threat--which is a very low-level high-priority process for any living creature. Even when they determine you're not a cop, they do notice you, and they never quite get over that feeling that you might be a cop. Having a cop-like bike and maybe a black/tan/brown jacket might work here better than a bright jacket, if you want to go that far.- Expect every car to make the worst move and plan ahead for how you're going to react. On a bike, you're playing a real-time chess match for you life and limb. The one second you stop playing, you're more likely to lose. - So obviously don't drink, or ride when you're tired or upset. Alcohol or distraction are present in most accidents. - What does that leave? Rider error is a big deal, for people who are usually driving like crazy and crash. I think that's 30% of all accidents. Don't do that! - Getting hit from behind. That sucks. Blink your brake lights. Get a small flashing LED? Maybe stop between lanes, but I'm not sure if that's any better, or worse. Stop behind cars rather than the pole position. At least then if you do get hit, it's low-speed. |

For what it's worth, 2 rides ago, I had a car pull out right as I rode past them, I even looked them straight in the eyes as I was passing them, they stopped in the middle of the road once they figured out what they did, it was one of those, think about it, see the problem, but then react to late so they stopped midway in the road =(
Just today, I had someone pull out right in front of me, thankfully I was watching them and could tell from the way they approached the road they were not going to wait, sure enough they pulled out right in front of me, thankfully at that point I already slowed down and ended up right up on their bumper. 2 pretty big issues in 3 rides. I can't wait to get back on my bike tomorrow. With out a doubt I'd trade my Turbo Z for my stock bike if I had to pick one. Riding > > > > > Driving. Even if it means getting killed one day, that's life, chit happens. People really don't understand just how great riding is.

Yeah it's more fun than I expected. And I'm a person who generally doesn't recognize anything as fun. I can't wait to go to work tomorrow just so I can ride my bike.

At the bottom there was articles, one of them said two brothers died with in 2 hours, one around 9 PM and the other one around 11 PM real close to where each other crashed. Must suck for their family not to loose one but two people in the same day, because motorcycles.

i too was thinking about getting a bike for my long 90 mile commute to work. that website was definitely an eye opener. i just don't know if it's worth the risk being that i will be on the road for so long daily.
