SS bike owners

Everytime i go riding on my R1 I'm always loosing feeling in my fingers and hands i know it's mainly because of the weight when leaning forward but is there any secrets to help avoid this problem or slow it down cause it starts to happen after only 1/2 hour of riding. I've tried many different things.

What year r1, out of curiosity? I've heard some guys I know talk about this being a problem with the "older" r1s before they had a dampener installed. I'd also suggest some good gloves which should help with the vibration.

Also, don't be afraid to scoot up and rest your hands by resting your forearm on the gas tank and leaning on that for a minute or two when you're in the straights.

Definitly look into a dampener, and drop your elbows. you should be lose on your arms.

Sounds like you are tensing up when riding. Try to relax a bit, and loosen up your arm. You sound like you are holding on with a death grip, like I used to when i first started riding loosening up should help

2005 R1, I do have a good pair of riding gloves but i'll have to try resting my forearm on the gas tank, I've tried the other things too but it just doesnt seem to work as well. Thanks for the suggestions guys

First thing, make sure your levers are adjusted properly. In your normal riding position you wrists should be straight when your fingers are on the levers.

The other big one is , make sure you keep your wrists straight while cruising.

I dont know how often you ride but sometimes when i dont ride for a while that happens to me. another suggestion would be to get some good gloves bro. nothing beats that.

How would a dampener help things out? Maybe I don't understand what the dampener is for, but from what I know it doesn't do anything but slow down the steering to help prevent tank slappers.

To the OP, you don't need to put any weight on your wrist, are you riding sitting in an upright position or are you a noob that is always hunched down over the tank even when doing a steady 55mph?

When on the backroads or doing a full throttle run, my elbows are tucked damn near touching my knees, when on a highway for the most part I'm sitting straight up with my left hand on my hip and my right hand on the throttle.

I think a lot of people on here need to read my post.

Gloves don't help, a must needed part of gear but just take a little buzz out of the bars.
Grips, gell whatever, don't help, there just about comfort while holding on.

Steering Damper, don't help, with or out without it you should be lite on your hands.
Weighted bar ends, take the vibe out a bit just like the gloves and grips. Just like the others they only cut down on fatigue. Not much to do with your hands falling asleep.

The only one i missed and is posted above me , relax your grip. I white knuckle death grip will help you hands fall asleep. Its cause you cut off circulation of blood to your hands. Just like you do if your wrists are bent.

Cliff Notes:

Proper lever position
Keep your wrists straight
Relax and only hold the bars with the force needed to hold on.

Anyone who doesnt believe me , please answer this question. What do the pads you can buy for the front of your keyboard and mouse do? How do they work?

Even on 600ss i've heard those problems as well, but anyways once again guys thaks for the advice no i dont hold on for dear life (just the wife lol) i believe it might be the gloves and how they fit (never rode without them) and i'm a very veiny (spelling) person so it could be clamping on a vein i'll ride tomorrow with them off see what happens; dont get much time to ride as much as i used to, job has me workin 12 hours or more a day.

One thing is that you are obviously resting to much weight on your arms and elbows. First off when you get going move your butt back further on the seat so you are not hugging the gas tank with your crotch. Use your thighs/knees to grip the tank. This allows you to support your back and upper body. have a slight bend on the arms, and ease up on your grip. Weighted Bar ends (i use Motovation Titanum bar ends) helps ease with the vibrations in the hands. Whether i ride my 600 or my friends 1000 i have never had any issues of numbness. It is all just a matter of body position and using your other limbs to take the weight off your arms/wrist and fingers

There's really not much you CAN do......SS bikes really aren't made for anything but racing......you have to pay for looking cool on the street by suffering with very uncomfortable and unnatural riding positions. That's why I go naked or supermoto now....SS bikes for me will only be track toys from here on.

Two things you can try... gel grips and gel gloves. They can be hard to find at stores, but search online.
