Default What type of Bike is it?

Hey all, I was visiting California a while ago and I noticed a style of bike I have not seen before. I saw about 5 of these things while I was there.

I don't have a pic

All I can do is explain it...maybe someone can help.

Not a 'naked' bike...
Not a street fighter
Not a chopper...

Looked old school.
Had a short rear fender.
Maybe rigid?
Hunched over riding style (dude was on the tank).
Short handle bars...

Looked kind of like old school cafe bike?

Possibly a bobber/cafe combo?

Probably saw several home built bikes similar to what Mr. D posted. Pretty much only limited by your imagination and building abilities. If my welding skills ever improve I'd like to try and fab one up.

Depends on how good you are with metal work, welding, mechincal ability and paint. If you can knock most of it out yourself you're looking at a couple of grand to get a true one off, custom bike up and running. If you have to have somebody else rebuild your motor, paint or what not, better bring a bigger piggy bank to the table.

Most of the ones I've seen are usually built off an early to mid 80's frame. I've seen Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha used. Again, it's really up to what you want to do. Often the same motor is used too that was in the frame, if it came with a motor. You can also get into a sport bike frame from the mid 90's up, expect to pay more for your parts though.

These bikes tend to lean towards the cruising around town factor and not the speed factor. 500cc motors are fairly common. Not saying you can't plant a 1000cc motor and up in there, but in my opinion these bikes are made for cruising around downtown in the 1st-3rd gear range, not tearing it up on the back roads or riding wheelies on the interstate.

aside from the fabrication...seems pretty simple...a simple cruiser would be fun. Not looking for a show bike by any means...i'm off to make google my b!itch

Hit up Craigslist too, I've seen countless home made choppers come up on there in the $3-5k range.

Here's a little motivation, big $$$'s though...

Roland Sands, his designs tend to lean towards the modern sport bike with a retro theme.

Jesse Rooke designs some nice bikes too.

Cafe Racers.

If you don't have the building ability there are a few companies you can buy them from after market. Triumph makes the thruxton from the factory.

The yellow one above and this one are the same. I've ridden it and love it.

Just can't afford two bike right now.
