Theres really no need to buy motorcycle boots for your MSF course. Any pair of boots will do, I had a pair of Magnum mid calf boots from Sears for my MSF course. Super comfy with no chance of me burning my leg on the exhaust. I think brand new they're like $95-$100.
Joe Rocket gloves from any motorcycle store for hand protection. Price is really good for what you're getting. Will run you maybe $50-$60.
I'd say go ahead and buy a helmet for MSF, I did and was glad I made the buy. The helmets they have at the course are all used and smell like crap. I'd never want to put my head in one of those things. A basic model HJC's would be a good investment, pretty cheap, and it can serve as your spare helmet for later. Wouldn't recommend an expensive helmet right off the bat, as chances of falling are a lot higher during the first couple of riding sessions. Trust me you wouldn't want to scratch a $500 helmet while you're learning.
Other than that have fun! The course has a lot of good information for new riders.

The # 1 thing for gear is the fit. You could have a $600 helmet, if it doesnt fit great it wont protect you anywhere near as much as a $100 helmet that fits.
As to gloves, for the riding program, use whatever, but for the street make sure you get a full glove that goes down your forearm. I road for a long time with basic 50 dollar gloves but after seeing a few outcomes from wrecks with those gloves I'll never wear them again.
Either they rip open, or just rip off since they all use a basic wrest strap.
A good leather jacket, good set of gloves, a helmet that fits properly. I dont think that a 600 dollar helmet protects any better then a 150 dollar one. really the only difference is fit and finish. as long as the helmet is dot and snell or ece 20-05 you will be fine.
Go to a store and try on a helmet. Fit > price any day. A shitty fit will do you no good in a crash.
Once you know what fits good, you can buy online on the cheap.
I agree! Definitely try on a helmet for fit locally if possible. But one good thing about Newenough is that you can return/exchange items with no restocking fees. Matter of fact, I was exchanging a jacket that was too small and after calling them to get an RMA, they sent me a new jacket before I even sent the old one back!
