It was a 95 miata five speed . I know the engines have good power for there size maybe its just that I have never driven a miata up to 60-80 miles an hour . I was just curious to know if any of you guys know about them I know marty does . I was just cruising not pushing the car at 3200 RPM on the expressway and going 60-65, If I let go of the gas pedal it drops to like to 50-55 at around 2500-2900 am I just worrying to much or is that how these engines are rev happy ?

I dont know much about that year but I know the new Miatas have a big power band. It all depends where redline is too. But 3200 rpms doesnt sound like its harming the engine. But the what the **** do I know I dont own one

I went from fourth at 4k as I was accelerating after merging on to the freeway. Then into fifth I accelerated up to sixty and it was at 3000 3200 all the way to about when I got off the freeway twenty minutes later . I thought the car was revving high like like I should shift into sixth gear lol.

My g/f's Mazdaspeed runs just above 3000 in 6th at 60mph... pretty disappointing gear ratio IMO...

Damn that sucks....that does sound pretty crappy 'cause you are getting worse gas mileage as RPMs go up.

It's probably normal...I had an '03 that would rev around 4000 at 80-85 mph. Made me wish the model I bought would have come with a 6MT instead of a 5MT.

maybe it's normal for a miata, butt it doesn't sound normal for a regular car. That should be 4th.

Ok so im not imagining stuff I guess. Juno, John and you guys seem to have experienced what I did today . The Miata is a great car but I was a little turned off by that fifth gear, I have never felt that in a car I guess im used to driving other cars . I loved the way how zippy it is and handles fantastic, so I guess I should maybe look into a six speed. When was the first year they made the six speed ? Just so i can see how that feels opposed to the five speed. I have driven many cars, the only way I can describe the feeling is that the engine is more than the gear ratios . I love how the short throw feel and the clutch on the miatas its fantastic.

That sounds like my old jetta (94')
She'd run at a 100 KMH (Approx 60 MPH) at 3100 RPM in 5th. at 110 KMH she'd run at 3500 RPM again in 5th....

A great car for stop and go traffic, but higher rev numbers such as the above did worry me....... untill the engine lasted to 300,000KMS!!!!lol!!!

In my 1991 miata i had the speedo disconnected to stop adding miles to odom. I would estimate my speed based on 5th gear rpms. The estimate I used was 1000 rpms per 20 mph. So 3000 would coencide with 60 mph.

I think S2k and RX8 do the same, rev much higher than Z at 60mph.

Nope. I had a few brews at my local pub with some buddies, when my mother called me at 10:30 asking me to pick my little bro up from the bus station and bring him back to her house.... Sucks because the bus was late, and it sorta ruined my night.
That sir, is why I was posting at 12 am on a Saturday night.

Most pre-2K Miatas have close ratio gearing. It's very simlar gearing the to Nismo Competition box. It allows the Engine to stay in it's powerband for speed up to 120. The 6 speed model has a cruising gear, but most models are built as true sports cars, which means that having a low RPM cruising gear just isn't in the car. That and the engine doesn't have a lot of TQ, so a tall gear would just bog.

They still get about 30 MPG Highway, but when you only weigh 2300 lbs, you can get away with a lot.

What I reported was the rpms in 6th gear... At 70mph, I'm humming at 3500rpm in top gear. However, I'm not sure if the Mazdaspeed has different ratios than the other models.

So Marty it was perfectly normal what I experienced eh . I loved the car, I guess I have to drive it often to get used to it. So you are saying I can push it up to almost a 100mph from sixty mph in fifth gear and stay there im not harming the car in anyway ? on another thought how much should I expect to pay for a 1995 Miata with the seven spoke wheels, power mirrors, leather and five speed with the Hardtop around 94 k miles .

I drive my Miata daily on the highway at 80-85 mph and the tach reads over 4k. I still get right around 30 mpg with the top up. The engine in the Miata was turbocharged (but not in the Miata) in Japan so for NA use it's over built. I've taken my Miata on a 11 hour trip running 80-100 the whole way and my car runs great at 70k miles.
