I don't have time to go into all of this again. It's total BS. See http://my350z.com/forum/other-vehicl...ml#post6072956 amongst my many other posts on this. JAMEZ@CiNcity: The battery is fully recyclable and is warranted to 10 year/150K miles in CA and other CARB states. 349K miles (http://john1701a.com/prius/owners/jesse4.htm) on a previous gen Prius on the original battery before someone took totaled his car isn't bad. To top it off, the idiot CCSU college student "threw the paper together in 1/2 hour of being bored. I was just having fun lol" per http://www.mercurycougar.net/forums/...45&postcount=8. He even published a (not very good) retraction/admission that the CNW data is questionable at http://clubs.ccsu.edu/recorder/edito...asp?NewsID=203 in which he claims a Tesla Roadster is $30K. He can't even get his facts straight. That calls into question his opinions and assertions.

It should be MANDATORY that anyone who wishes to cite that CNW "junk science" and retracted Sudbury story that everything seems to lead back to be forced to read the retraction and do a little simple math. There'd be no more citation of the junk. I'm tired of seeing these claims of 'environmental harm/impact' of NiMH batteries when it again all leads back to the above debunked junk science and retracted story. Even CNW's junk science (in the rebuttal at http://www.thecarconnection.com/arti...oding-the-myth) says "later says that it calculates the Prius’s battery as costing $93 in energy to recycle." As for your latter point... err, hybrids aren't tied to any one fuel source (gasoline). Diesel hybrids exist. Also, go look at the price of diesel in the US and look at the emission ratings (air pollution scores) of so-called "clean diesels". None come even close to meeting the AT-PZEV rating of the Prius, Altima Hybrid and the PZEV ratings of many other non-hybrid gasoline powered cars.

Not saying the article is worthless or holds its weight, but there is some truth to the issue here. ALL of these hybrids will have dead batteries one day, thats the nature of the battery. Then, if it does last 300k its out of warranty and who has to pay for the new battery? also, who pays the recycling fee, i know i cover it on oil and tires, probably batteries too. too many reasons for me to not own a hybrid. To the guy with the 300k on the clock, seems like its mostly highway miles.....least amount of strain on the battery. |

Do you really know how far 300K miles is? It's driving from LA to NYC 107 times. |

I can't believe nobody picked up on the "brand new 06" statement. That's an 08 in the pic, you can tell by the wheels. I would hope that dealership hasn't had an 06 sitting on their showroom floor for 2+ years!

That is an '06, actually, you can tell by the hood. Those wheels were optional in 06. Here's one just like it (better color): http://www.vipertraderonline.com/details.php?id=2884 Last edited by CLETUS; 08-21-2008 at 07:29 PM. |

Look at http://wallofcheese.blogspot.com/200...mental_03.html and http://priuschat.com/forums/prius-ma...tml#post390594 to go point by point through everything he got wrong. I love how a 26 mpg Aveo is within "spitting distance" of 46 mpg Prius. Yes. Someone would need to pay for a replacement (not necessarily a new battery) when it wears out. As many priuschat would say, for an old car, it'd be more logical to buy an old one out of a wrecked Prius for cheap and drive it until that goes kaput. I've seen references (wish I could find it now) on priuschat to a business which specializes in refurbishing the battery packs by replacing the bad/weak modules. Toyota pays for the recycling and in fact they have a $200 bounty on the HV battery. See http://pressroom.toyota.com/Releases...T2004062345528. Be sure to look at my other post with references to the 2 160K mile Priuses and ones with 248K and 206K miles. Being so worried about battery replacement isn't particularly logical, esp. given its long warranty. It's just a bunch of FUD. It's an excuse akin to not buying a car w/a very expensive part that might fail, namely the transmission. In most cases, those aren't warranted beyond 5 years/60K miles and can cost thousands to replace. And yes, they do fail.
