thanks for the advice *ICE*

i decided between these three cameras that are within my budget. the d40, d3000, and d5000 are the choices and there is a deal with best buy selling packages with a Nikon - Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Zoom Lens. is it worth it to get the camera with this lense or should i just buy one of those cameras and spend my money on better lenses. mainly will use the camera for family event, cars, and special occasion.

I got the D3000 camera and bundle package for xmas from my gf! The bundle package includes the standard lens, the VR 55-200mm lens, carry bag, 4gb memeroy card, and two dvds on how to use the camera. This is my 1st dslr camera (coming from a point-n-shoot). I watched the 1st dvd for beginners to get a basic understanding of the camera. I now know all the different settings on the camera, and some basic terminology.

question: To achieve great pics (like some of the ones posted on page 2), do you have to use full manual mode, with manual focus? Or are some of the pics taken with auto focus and some of the preset modes? in other words, in each shot, is the shutter speed/aperture/focus all manual set?

^ I rarely use manual focus except in really dim light where it's hard for the camera to know which part of the darkness you want to focus on. But I do set the focus point on my camera very often especially when working on models. When doing action shots whether it be for models or cars I'll switch it to 3D tracking so it'll track my subject for me.

Talk about action here's my latest and greatest action telezoom woooohooo I'm like a kid in a toy store haha

It is no doubt an extremely sharp and fast lens. It really is as good as they say. It's staying on my camera and only comes off for the ultra wide angle - and occasionally the 50mm f1.4. Other than that it's my favorite lens for shooting candid and outdoors. The pic below is done at f4 and ISO 2000. It looks like it was taken on a bright and somewhat sunny day but it was actually dark and starting to drizzle. If you shoot FF it's a must have! For DX I'd stay with the much cheaper 55-200mm until you go full frame. It has a very beautiful bokeh as well.

Appreciate the info. I'm learning as I go. I'll keep my camera focus point in mind. Weather as been harsh here in the northeast, but i can't wait to get out there and start shooting when it warms up a bit.

You will be fine on the auto settings - the auto focus is fast and acurate. . . the rest of the setting can be set in any combination. . . you can do it all manually. . . you can set the shutter speed and let the camera set the rest, you can set the aperture and let the camera do the rest. . .

unless you are on a tripod with a stationary subject dont even worry about manual focus. . . .

The best thing you can do is just get out and take some pic's and see what the camera will do.

New to the DSLR game and just bought a D5000 w/ the lens kit. Working on learning how to properly use settings and stuff before buying lenses. So Alvin I'll be picking your brain for some tips soon as I get a chance.

BTW Any suggestions on a good first lense for portraits. Main goal for me is taking portraits of my daughter and family. TIA guys

Thanks man! Appreciate the info. I've been setting the camera to aperture mode, and manually setting it while letting the camera set everything else. Once i feel comfortable with my knowledge of aperture and feel i have a good handle on it, i will then go play around with the shutter speed. Wish the weather was nicer so i can get outside and get some pics with natuarally lighting.
