As I was sitting at my desk drinking my morning coffee this morning, I over heard a couple of my coworkers talking about "They should legalize all drugs (marijuana, cocaine, heroine etc.) to slow down crime"....
But putting my .02 cents...I highly disagree.
They both agreed to legalize them and pointed out some stuff:
1. Criminals will no longer kill to get cash to get drugs cuz it will be easily affordable.
2. It would destroy the Columbian Cartels
3. It will be treated like Alcohol, age limit and restrictions like driving
4. Its legal in Amsterdam and that country is fine
My .02 cents:
1. Effects on drugs are different than Alcohol. (turn into addicts faster, possible O/D also)
2. If its available and you are an addict, you will stop going to work, stop getting money, and steal again...now multiply by how many people u think this might happen to...im guessing several
3. Drunk driving is a problem now...imagine with this
British Columbia hasn't legalized harder drugs, but they do have safe injection sites. Results include less deaths due to overdosing, drug counciling referrals to users, and no increase in crime. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-col...is-report.html
While I don't agree with legalization of hard drugs, I think there should be actions taken to help those that are addicted.

Dont think it'll be a good idea....
VOTE NO for FREE COCAINE
You're basing your negatives on an assumption that legalizing drugs will make more people use them. I disagree and since you didn't provide any proof, I don't have to either.
Restrictions on drugs is just another freedom we've handed off to the government for the "greater good" without thinking of the consequences.
Cocaine and Heroine were both legal at earlier times in United States history. History shows that widespread use leads to widespread addiction-this is why they should remain illegal. Over 200,000 Americans were addicted to Heroine in the 1920s.

I don't think anyone in the OP conversation provided any proof, but there are a lot of jobs depending on the "War on Drugs". Police Depts, Border Patrol, DEA, Judges, Lawyers...etc the list is extensive.

And now the rough estimate is between 750,000 and 1,000,000 users. Sounds like making it illegal did a lot of good.
will never be legal because its hard to TAX.... only reason cigarets and alchoole are is b/c they are heavilly taxed on.
if the government cant make money on it, it wont happen.

If they made the production legal, regulated and controlled like alcohol and tobacco, it's no harder to tax. Plus the drugs will be safer.

I agree. Do you think this will take money away from the Columbian cartels or do you think they will make money off the legalization? The price drop by legalizing would make it cheaper wouldn't it? (aside from the taxes to the user)

It would absolutely take money away from the illegal producers and from distributors. Manufacturing competition would spring up in the US and the cost of getting the drugs here would make the drug unprofitable. If a user could get the drug from a pharmacist as an over the counter "medication" the competition in the streets of LA for drug turf would disappear.
The key is to not overtax I suppose. The cigarette black market has been growing in the last couple of years because of the increases in taxes. I don't think it's gotten to a point where the government is actually netting less because of the higher taxes, but it's not far off.
I'm all for legalizing everything. If people want to do it, they're going to do it anyways, so why not have them do it safely. Imagine what this would do for our prison populations. The fact that you can get drugs in prison should make it obvious to even the densest of people that you can't stop the supply if there is demand.
