I will be the first to admit that I have to give props to Obama for these actions. Our willingness to indefinitely imprison and torture foreign combatants has never sat right with me. I don't care how much information we get from it....it's not worth it. I thought Obama said something really poignant on this yesterday when he talked about that we should never compromise our safety for our principles or something along those lines. All this secretive black ops stuff should die and I'm thankful that Obama has made strides to kill it.
I agree.

+1
as much as I know I'm going to disagree with his continued bailout stance, this was the right move.

This will be great.......instead of just 62 of the enemy combatants showing back up on the battlefield.......this will pave the way for all of them to return. Hopefully none of our soldiers are killed by one these "freedom fighters"......

So you disagree with the decision?

Yep, because they're so obviously guilty of terrist crimes that it has taken us four years to figure out what they're guilty of.

This isn't about releasing enemy combatants... that's mischaracterizing the issue.
The issue is about the U.S. government imprisoning people, without filing charges against them, without giving them any legal opportunity to challenge their detention, and torturing them.
If we have the evidence, the detainees should be brought to trial. If not, we need to get them the hell out of our dungeon. We need to **** or get off the pot.
Throwing people into a dungeon, torturing them, and denying them any legal process... it goes against everything this country represents, and it insults our longstanding tradition in due process under the law. Frankly, that's the hallmark of a two-bit dictator, like Edie Amin or Robert Mugabe. It is perhaps the most shameful thing this country has done in my lifetime.
I guess we should give detained terrorists a nice check and an apology letter while we're at it. Terrorists do not deserve the rights of American citizens! Every single one of them must be laughing their ass off at how we bend over our backs to make them comfortable .

Exactly.
Due process is part of the foundation of this country. If we're going to keep going down this route we should just open gulags and call it a day.

If they were all "terrorists" there would not be an issue.

generally speaking, before you can define someone as a 'terrorist', 'felon', etc... you would have to have convicted them in a court of law, following due-process with the accused having the ability to defend themselves against the accusations...
there have already been documented cases of people being bought over to Guantanamo or other such illicit centers based on nothing more than an accusation or a whim...
but maybe you don't care for the rule of law or due process, if that's the case, maybe you should move to North Korea or some other non-western society that doesn't value individual freedoms.

gmueip, you fail to see that they had 4 years, interrogation tactics, secluded and expensive as hell prison, and they cant prove they are terrorists. It shows you that those methods, which were also expensive, were not effective. GITMO was more of a Bush symbol, that we're going to torture and put in prision anybody thats against US middle east interests...with an added Cold war "spice" since the prision is in Cuba.
IT wasnt about gathering intelligence, or providing security. These prisioners could have been put elsewhere, processed and interrogated in a more efficient and cheaper matter.
Its easy to nickle and dime, but we should all know freedom is not free. Also being a leader is not trying to please everyone like Obama is trying to do. I believe the reasons for all these actions is due to the fact that he wants to please everyone, inlcuding other countries. Its lonely being on the top, trying to please everyone will not keep us up there. Also if there are real issues, there would of been major evidence on the NEW YORK TIMES newspaper, i've still failed to see any in their headline news.
PS Their countries dont want them, the liberals that want them free dont want them in their back yard, only the swiss would take them and set them free!
not really Quick. if they were on US soil I think there were legal complications and no other country would let us roost (though they would allow us temporary use).
