There are many common misconceptions about nuclear power that can be proven to be false, even among people with a variety of opinions. For example, it is often stated that nuclear power plants are very large and cost at least a couple of billion dollars. However, ever since there have been nuclear power plants, there have been some that have been small enough to fit inside submarines. One of those submarines is only 12 feet in diameter and could fit on half of a football field. It has also been said that nuclear power plants must operate at a nearly constant power level, yet they can power both submarines and aircraft carriers through extreme maneuvers....

The massive expense of the current fleet of nuclear reactors was due to the reactors being essentially one of a kind and add ons having to be retrofitted to comply with changing NRC guidelines. The new generation emphasizes a modular approach. The designs are preapproved (AP1000 FTW!) by the NRC so the new plants will be identical when constructed.

Interesting stuff indeed....how much did the power plant cost where you work and how much power does it provide?

I'm also curious, does the water surrounding the control rods and fuel themselves have to be replaced? and if so, what do they do with the radioactive water (if it is radioactive)?

Everyone thinks I'm at a power reactor. I work at a plant that makes the fuel for reactors, actually it's the biggest fuel manufacturing plant in the world at the moment.

Each plant had it's own costs/drama some spiraled so far out of control they were never finished. Remember the movie Abyss? It was filmed in a half completed containment building. I'd say the average plant produces 1000MWe (Mega Watt electric). They have a coolant water makeup system. I'd have to look up the exact amount but I doubt it's a lot. A leak in the main coolant system would shut down the plant. If they do have a leak they would probably containerize it for HLW disposal (high level waste disposal). Or sell it as bottled water labeled Evian.

I could look up any specific plants power rating and see if I can find the coolant water makeup systems specs tomorrow.

All the hype surrounds alternative fuels, but fission and, hopefully soon, fusion are still the best of all these energy sources

I like the gas cooled gas turbine reactor. Looks like a winner to me.

It's a great design IMO. The only issue I see is the fuel (holding fission products in adequately) and the NRC won't like that there is no containment building so certification in the US might be an issue.

I worked in/on a submarine nuc plant for 20 years. Some advice...

1. Don't believe anything the press says about nuclear power. They have NO CLUE.

2. You can't really compare military plants and civilian plants. Two very different applications. Civilian plants want to either be shut down or be at 100%. Military plants are all over depending on the needs of the ship/boat.

3. Did I mention reporters are idiots and know nothing about nuclear power?

4. Military plants aren't built to make money. Everything is massively over engineered. Once you make it civilian it is a business and there to make a profit. They are going to do the minimum & the cheapest to get buy.

5. Did I mention reporters are idiots and know nothing about nuclear power?

What part of that messed you up? I never understood the point of that. The thing that nearly eliminated me was the knee drop. That was killer.

My friend's dad works at the NRC. I should get his take on it and post the results here.

I have an obvious bunion on my right foot, and both feet are flat as hell. The foot Dr. said my bunion is as bad as a 70 year old lady that's been wearing high heels all their life.

What does he do there?

that's why they need to store the current waste in an easily retrievable fashion. They're going to want the Pu and U at some point.

I live about 4miles from Wateford 3 Nuclear Power Plant in St. Charles Parish LA, trying to get hire on there right now actually.

Local radiation levels are taken once a year by a private company to make sure the plant has a level that is average to other local areas... every year, Shell Chemical across the Mississippi river from the Nuke and our industrial train hub all have higher radiation levels..... who'da thought right?

im looking forward to the fussion thing....
