Let's cut taxes, as I want, and spend more, as Obama would like.
By RUSH LIMBAUGH
There's a serious debate in this country as to how best to end the recession. The average recession will last five to 11 months; the average recovery will last six years. Recessions will end on their own if they're left alone. What can make the recession worse is the wrong kind of government intervention.
I believe the wrong kind is precisely what President Barack Obama has proposed. I don't believe his is a "stimulus plan" at all -- I don't think it stimulates anything but the Democratic Party. This "porkulus" bill is designed to repair the Democratic Party's power losses from the 1990s forward, and to cement the party's majority power for decades.
Keynesian economists believe government spending on "shovel-ready" infrastructure projects -- schools, roads, bridges -- is the best way to stimulate our staggering economy. Supply-side economists make an equally persuasive case that tax cuts are the surest and quickest way to create permanent jobs and cause an economy to rebound. That happened under JFK, Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. We know that when tax rates are cut in a recession, it brings an economy back.
Recent polling indicates that the American people are in favor of both approaches.
Notwithstanding the media blitz in support of the Obama stimulus plan, most Americans, according to a new Rasmussen poll, are skeptical. Rasmussen finds that 59% fear that Congress and the president will increase government spending too much. Only 17% worry they will cut taxes too much. Since the American people are not certain that the Obama stimulus plan is the way to go, it seems to me there's an opportunity for genuine compromise. At the same time, we can garner evidence on how to deal with future recessions, so every occurrence will no longer become a matter of partisan debate.
Congress is currently haggling over how to spend $900 billion generated by American taxpayers in the private sector. (It's important to remember that it's the people's money, not Washington's.) In a Jan. 23 meeting between President Obama and Republican leaders, Rep. Eric Cantor (R., Va.) proposed a moderate tax cut plan. President Obama responded, "I won. I'm going to trump you on that."
Yes, elections have consequences. But where's the bipartisanship, Mr. Obama? This does not have to be a divisive issue. My proposal is a genuine compromise.
Fifty-three percent of American voters voted for Barack Obama; 46% voted for John McCain, and 1% voted for wackos. Give that 1% to President Obama. Let's say the vote was 54% to 46%. As a way to bring the country together and at the same time determine the most effective way to deal with recessions, under the Obama-Limbaugh Stimulus Plan of 2009: 54% of the $900 billion -- $486 billion -- will be spent on infrastructure and pork as defined by Mr. Obama and the Democrats; 46% -- $414 billion -- will be directed toward tax cuts, as determined by me.
Then we compare. We see which stimulus actually works. This is bipartisanship! It would satisfy the American people's wishes, as polls currently note; and it would also serve as a measurable test as to which approach best stimulates job growth.
I say, cut the U.S. corporate tax rate -- at 35%, among the highest of all industrialized nations -- in half. Suspend the capital gains tax for a year to incentivize new investment, after which it would be reimposed at 10%. Then get out of the way! Once Wall Street starts ticking up 500 points a day, the rest of the private sector will follow. There's no reason to tell the American people their future is bleak. There's no reason, as the administration is doing, to depress their hopes. There's no reason to insist that recovery can't happen quickly, because it can.
In this new era of responsibility, let's use both Keynesians and supply-siders to responsibly determine which theory best stimulates our economy -- and if elements of both work, so much the better. The American people are made up of Republicans, Democrats, independents and moderates, but our economy doesn't know the difference. This is about jobs now.
The economic crisis is an opportunity to unify people, if we set aside the politics. The leader of the Democrats and the leader of the Republicans (me, according to Mr. Obama) can get it done. This will have the overwhelming support of the American people. Let's stop the acrimony. Let's start solving our problems, together. Why wait one more day?
An article with valid points, but it is said it will go nowhere.
Do you feel that cutting corporations taxes would enable them to keep more employees aboard, or would the corps. still cut people will increasing profit?

Cutting people cuts overhead, but If the economy starts to recover, And they see a profit, they will hire MORE employees to deal with their increased throughput. Companies usually use extra capitol to expand... And if not, they pass it along to the stockholders, or owners, or employees (in the case of profit sharing). It always makes its way back into the economy.
People fail to recognize that TAX CUTS ARE LIKE SPENDING, EXCEPT THE MONEY GOES WHERE IT IS USEFUL TO THE PERSON THAT EARNED THAT MONEY. The "Stimulus" package that has been proposed has a lot of elements that are not "stimulating" at all...
IE, all new cars for the federal government. Yeah, theres a ton of money, THAT GOES DIRECTLY TO FORD. I guess they have better lobbyists than GM or Chrysler. Oh, but a tax cut would help ALL THREE MORE than a one time purchase to just one.

So, what does the daily show have to do with anything?
Funny, yes. Accurate, no.
The truth is, if you look at the spending, and really THINK about where that money is going, It will only prevent disaster for SOME people FOR A LITTLE WHILE. It's a delay, nothing else. Give a man a job, and he eats till that job is over. Make it beneficial for a business to employ him, and he'll eat untill he ****s up or leaves.

There's no way the government knows how to spend my money better than I do - and that's what they're attempting to do for me. About 90% of government spending is illegal or immoral under the Constitution. Politicians have become the true welfare class sucking those few of us that still have to work for a living dry. Look at the percentage of the tax burden - and the growing deficit for proof of that. For a couple hundred years taxes in the low single digits was good enough - enough for the Army, Navy, Marines, and bridges and roads ... now we're looking at about 50% - some would argue a bit more, some less - but the rate is TEN TIMES historical rates.
Is my life ten times better because I pay half of my life energy into the government? Has the number of school drop outs lowered by 5%? Has the non-tweaked/tampered with school grades improved 5%? We're getting played big time by both sides. Big time.

Here's a perfect example from this morning's news:
Quote:
The bill offers $6B USD to help expand broadband to areas it does not currently reach and $20B USD to help America bring its health care records online, which should help to greatly cut health care costs.
The bill also includes $11B USD to revamp the nation's electrical grid which is very dilapidated throughout much of the country, having been built in the 1960s, 1950s, or even earlier. The bill will also pump $2B USD into energy efficiency and renewable energy research.
Why would US tax payer dollars be needed to expand commercial broadband service into areas that it doesn't currently reach? Understand that if it costs $50,000 to run a line out to some farmer's ranch in Iowa that we're never going to recoop that and that there's going to be continuing on-going maintenance cost and on-going demand for more free Internet service. Anyone want to bet that those reduced costs to the commercial hospitals will actually be passed on to us?
Why should we spend $20,000,000,000.00 dollars to help commercial hospitals to go on-line with their records? Does any one want to be a 350Z pink slip against mine that within a year of those records going on-line that no less than 100,000 of them will have been compromised? How many people want their heath records public?
$11,000,000,000.00 for the commercial electric companies. Last time I looked I my bill I was paying a ton of money for upkeep, fuel surcharges, and generator maintenance.
I'm almost OK with just $2B into research dollars as long as they go to the government's colleges/labs in funding.

isn't the proposed $20B for on-line health records supposed to lower costs in the future? i haven't read the specific details of the program, and although i admit that having records on-line would be problematic in terms of privacy, the benefits of the program (if it works as intended) would dramatically lower insurance premiums and health-care costs
for the $11B in commerical electrical companies upgrades, i can supply a better answer. part of the upgrade would go to infrastructure, and hopefully to better efficiency, via smart grid planning (http://earth2tech.com/2009/01/26/faq-smart-grid/)
also, as im currently working in the wind energy business, a lot of the problems are tied to the credit crisis....currently, most wind farm projects are backed up, initially from 1 month to currently 6 months. you might read that GE actually reported higher income from their wind turbine business (their turbines are sold out until 2011), but a lot of them are sitting at the factory becuase the wind farm projects can't get financing
