WASHINGTON (AP) - The $800 billion-plus economic stimulus measure making its way through Congress could steer government checks to illegal immigrants, a top Republican congressional official asserted Thursday.
The legislation, which would send tax credits of $500 per worker and $1,000 per couple, expressly disqualifies nonresident aliens, but it would allow people who don't have Social Security numbers to be eligible for the checks.
Undocumented immigrants who are not eligible for a Social Security number can file tax returns with an alternative number. A House-passed version of the economic recovery bill and one making its way through the Senate would allow anyone with such a number, called an individual taxpayer identification number, to qualify for the tax credits.
A revolt among GOP conservatives to similar provisions of a 2008 economic stimulus bill, which sent rebate checks to most wage earners, forced Democratic congressional leaders to add stricter eligibility requirements. That legislation, enacted in February 2008, required that people have valid Social Security numbers in order to get checks.
The GOP official voiced concerns about the latest economic aid measure on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it publicly.
Republicans have already blasted the package for including what they argue is wasteful spending and omitting tax cuts for wealthier people and businesses they say are needed to jump-start the anemic economy.
Not a single Republican voted for an $819 billion version of the plan when it passed the House on Wednesday.
GOP senators arranged a midday news conference to voice their concerns.
So the way I'm reading this, its not intentionally allowing illegals to get a stimulus, rather there's a loophole which can be exploited? GOP has a fair argument, that loophole should be remedied...

This is BS. Not only am I having to work to support the people that do not want to work, the Banks, Car Mfg, and Mortgage companies. I now also have to support the illegal immigrants.
I reread that again and what I find ironic is how Republicans argue that his bill contains wasteful spending when the last bill the Republicans passed had ridiculous amounts of wasteful spending.
BTW I won't believe this until I actually see it in the bill.
I personally don't get that upset when people that are illegally part of the system, don't play by the rules everyone else must and are mostly a burden to our society get federal money.
However when individuals with ambition that climb to heights of success 99% of people don't have the ability or desire to, pay millions in taxes to the federal government and are a major contributor to our society get big bonuses while their companies receive federal money I take major issue.
That's hilarious! If an illegal alien files a tax return, they're doomed to be turned in or tracked down. I see it going down like this:
"So do you want the money mailed to your house or electronically deposited?"
"Senor, I don't want the IRS to know where I live and I don't have a bank account with a real name. What should I do?"
"Turn yourself in for deportation...."

Hey man, you need to get on board. It’s the new Obama "Era of Responsibility". First act is the bail out irresponsible banks and companies. LOL
I second that that fair tax!
i'd rather see an illigal immigrant getting some of that money instead of a guy on welfare, drug addict and drug dealer.
its this kind of thinking that bothers me, how is a welfare recipient anywhere close to being listed in the same category as a drug addict or a drug dealer?

most people don't need welfare, they're on welfare because they just want an easy paycheck (lazy bums), on the other hand there is a small percentage of people that really deserve to be on welfare, example handicapped people and low income people.
