If you can read the whole article (see link), I found this to be a great explanation on why most people can't have a meaningful debate about things like religion, politics, etc. Paul Graham argues that people often see their religion as part of their own identity. Therefore, to criticize the religion, even constructively, is to criticize their identity. And the usual degenerative arguments ensue...
