Today, Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Committee Dave Camp (R-MI) released a letter from the non-partisan Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) confirming that the failure to comply with the individual mandate to buy health insurance contained in the Pelosi health care bill (H.R. 3962, as amended) could land people in jail. The JCT letter makes clear that Americans who do not maintain “acceptable health insurance coverage” and who choose not to pay the bill’s new individual mandate tax (generally 2.5% of income), are subject to numerous civil and criminal penalties, including criminal fines of up to $250,000 and imprisonment of up to five years.
In response to the JCT letter, Camp said: “This is the ultimate example of the Democrats’ command-and-control style of governing – buy what we tell you or go to jail. It is outrageous and it should be stopped immediately.”
Key excerpts from the JCT letter appear below:
“H.R. 3962 provides that an individual (or a husband and wife in the case of a joint return) who does not, at any time during the taxable year, maintain acceptable health insurance coverage for himself or herself and each of his or her qualifying children is subject to an additional tax.” [page 1]

“If the government determines that the taxpayer’s unpaid tax liability results from willful behavior, the following penalties could apply…” [page 2]
- - - - - - - - - -
“Criminal penalties
Prosecution is authorized under the Code for a variety of offenses. Depending on the level of the noncompliance, the following penalties could apply to an individual:
• Section 7203 – misdemeanor willful failure to pay is punishable by a fine of up to $25,000 and/or imprisonment of up to one year.
• Section 7201 – felony willful evasion is punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years.” [page 3]
When confronted with this same issue during its consideration of a similar individual mandate tax, the Senate Finance Committee worked on a bipartisan basis to include language in its bill that shielded Americans from civil and criminal penalties. The Pelosi bill, however, contains no similar language protecting American citizens from civil and criminal tax penalties that could include a $250,000 fine and five years in jail.
“The Senate Finance Committee had the good sense to eliminate the extreme penalty of incarceration. Speaker Pelosi’s decision to leave in the jail time provision is a threat to every family who cannot afford the $15,000 premium her plan creates. Fortunately, Republicans have an alternative that will lower health insurance costs without raising taxes or cutting Medicare,” said Camp.
According to the Congressional Budget Office the lowest cost family non-group plan under the Speaker’s bill would cost $15,000 in 2016.
Well ... I hope I don't get to say I told you so in a year or so. Unfortunately the chances of this being a good thing for our country in the long run and pigs flying are about the same.
Health care represents about 17% of our economy... you liberals better hope this health care bill works out exactly the way yall think it will... because if you're wrong, that is a huge chunk of the economy that the government will have its hand in, with the potential to corrupt and basically destroy.

I knew that means i was prolly gonna get it so i started taking tons of zinc and vitamin c and loading up on dayquil. My efforts paid off and all i got was a headcold and sore throat. it did take a week to go away but it was much more mild then a regular flu.

+1,000,000....it barely passed th house...hopefully they are seeing that there are tons of Americans who don't want this!!!
It wont matter, just like 300:1 against TARP and it was passed anyway.
I was watching the debate on CSPAN and the Dems kept on throwing out the same number: 36 million uninsured Americans. I have not done much research of these numbers but my rudimentary hungover math tells me this is roughly 12% of the population. Tell me - insert majority percentage here- of Americans wont get the short end of the stick to make up for those 12%? It cant be that simple.
ETA: If this abortion comes to full fruition, it will be a huge nail in the coffin of America as we know it.

You're giving them too much credit. They weren't saying 36 million, but incorrectly stating "46 million Americans uninsured." That old geezer that had the last talk in the House (he helped start Medicare) said 46mm Americans, even though the actual Census study (which he clearly didn't read) states 46 million PEOPLE and 36 million of those are Americans.
Hopefully the Senate shoots this down. The 218 mark happened with like 3 votes left (1 dem and 2 repub) after which 1 repub voted for it.

Uhh ya nice try with the ridiculous propaganda but if you actually READ THE DAMN BILL there is nothing of the sort saying you will go to jail if you don't buy insurance. http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h3962/text

You're not understanding what he's saying. The two sections he's referring to are in the IRS tax codes, NOT the health care reform bill. The health care reform bill will impose a TAX on those that do NOT get insurance. If you do NOT pay the penalty, the IRS tax code would apply. I think the penalty is 2.5% of your income or something like that.
SOOO, if you can't afford to buy the insurance for whatever reason, then you get this huge tax fine? That makes sense.
And before you tell me "there will be subsidies", there are alot of subsidies out there now, and people still can't afford things. There is always people that get really pinched to pay for something, but make too much to get help. Anyone have any idea how much this public option insurance will cost a month?
