It all boils down to the dollars. A hospital that treats the unisured gets no payment for the services less government contributions. So they can't afford the staffing and equipment that is used to save lives as well as a complete for profit hospital. I think I'll keep and pay for my own health insurance so I can go to a better hospital if needed. Get insurance folks. It might be more important than video games, cell phones or god forbid a sports car!
Further proof that we need universal healthcare asap. People who are uninsured may not be able to afford it and they need to be allowed better avenues to get insured!

Ok if the taxpayers have to provide insurance then we should be able to determine what luxuries that person can buy. Fair enough? I mean someone has to work and pay the taxes for that coverage right? Or maybe we should all slack off because whats the point of working if you have to give half of it away. Shoot can't do that because there goes the taxpayer provided health care. Dang what to do?

Agreed. No big screen TVs, no PS3/Xbox/Wii, no cars newer than 10 years old, no computers, no methampetamines, no fast food, no sugary drinks, no iPhones or iPod, no jewelry, no cigarettes, no alcohol, no shoes that cost more than $50, no designer jeans, etc.

we should already have this in place as well as drug testing.

No, I don't want to pay for it.
YOU can go to hospitals and volunteer to pony up the cash, but don't think that I should.

Make them wear a scarlet letter. "M" for mooch.
Got to do something so people will start having some pride... It used to be just knowing you were on government assistance was enough to motivate people.
What if you lost your job, especially in todays economy and you or your family get into an accident? What would you then?
I'd rely on savings + Cobra until I got another job.

The father needs to do whatever it takes to provide for his kids, including working at McDonalds or digging ditches if need be.
Great idea, let's force all university students over the age of 23( the age they can no longer be covered under most parent's health insurance plans) to drop out of school and get a "better" job at Home Depot (or some other menial job that provide health insurance) just so they can have affordable health care instead of providing a safety net for them to fall back on until they have finished their education and can get those jobs that provide decent healthcare....great idea....
Life just isn't that simple Hraes...you should know this having been a university student at one point in your life.

People can't work and go to school at the same time? FYI, that's a rhetorical question.

Sometimes the workload of completing a graduate degree doesn't permit one to work a full time job with health benefits and get decent grades at the same time (a part-time job, sure but those usually don't have health benefits). It does depend on the field of study though. Medical students definitely do not have time to work a full time job at Home Depot just so they have healthcare when they get really sick.

I worked through school and had medical benefits.
Worked full time, went to school part time. Yeah it took me a long ass time and I had to take out some student loans but I did it.

So your argument is that we should subsidize people that are perfectly capable of working so their lives aren't too tough?

WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW OLD MAN??!?!?!
Do you want a gold star?
The point is, lots of people can't do what you did, especially if there are other complication in their life. And that it really shouldn't be that enormously difficult to complete a degree and have health benefits at the same time.
May I ask how much in student loans you had to pay back? And how long were you attending Uni?
