"This occurred because KBR did not effectively manage government property," Bowen wrote. "As a result, we projected that KBR could not account for 6,975 property items from an inventory of 20,531 valued at $61.1 million."
Halliburton is under investigation by the Justice Department for allegedly overcharging the military by $61 million for fuel purchases.
isn't it strange that both amount are very close? $60 million? Maybe they lost it to sell it on eBay so they can pay back the overcharging of fuel
>> and they say our government is lazy and inefficient
Government workers aren't "lazy." They just have less incentive to be efficient. Work as hard as they might, government employees know they won't get fired unless they do something terribly wrong (if even then), and won't get a raise if they do well.
It's similar for companies that get paid by the government, such as Halliburton.
Companies overcharge and undercharge all the time in the real world, and the government's rightful place is to settle disputes via the court system. When the government *is* one of the parties involved, there's no good way to resolve problems like this. Companies go out of business when they have too many problems like this. The government raises our taxes.
>> so you're saying the common thought process of a Joe Schmoe in corporation is, "jee, I better do my best not to waste my company's resources"
No I didn't say anything about a common thought process of Joe Schmoe.
I'm comparing the opportunity of a government employee to the opportunity of a private employee.
>> I take it you don't have much experience with corporations.
I did my best to work hard, and doubled my pay twice over in two years. I wasn't on a pay schedule like a government employee. If I were employed by the government, I would have had no reason to work extra hard, and would still be making nearly the same amount as when I went into the job.

Originally posted by nbdyfcnsqnc I'm here quite a lot, and I'm unemployed. I'm also working on a program like photoshop that I plan to go into business selling next year, so I'm always in front of my computer anyway. I seem to get the most work done late at night, so that's when I work. (One more thing before I go to sleep! Ok, another thing... then another, then the sun comes up.)

I take it you don't have much experience with corporations.
Actually, I worked over 34 years with two corporations and I did my best not to waste company resources. Why would you not take that approach?

I was unemployed, but that's because I earned so much in the previous three years I can afford to be. That money I earned is what gave me the opportunity to go into business myself.
(The one-man paint program got pre-empted for some other ventures. But I'll get back to it someday. Not only is it a paint program, but it has an interactive system that teaches people how to paint.)
Now how about you explain why you think the government is more or as efficient as private enterprise? You're just wasting your time because your argument is unwinable.
We just lost a secretary to a government job. Why? She took a pay cut to get additional federal holidays, in addition to the 4 weeks' vacation she got with us and will get with the government.
What kind of job do you think that type of person will do with no upside in income? Will she work harder than she did with us, or will she enjoy her job protection and loaf?

I wonder what they are comparing it with
Government is inefficient precisely because they paid Halliburton all that money. If a private firm was screwed by Halliburton like this there'd be a lawsuit faster than you can say 'subpoena.' But the Government, lacking competitors, probably will just eat the loss.
