Machine shop labor rates
Sup guys,
I contacted a local shop to get a quote on block building rates. Yes...I know IPP has a pretty dope package. Just wanted to see if I could do it cheaper on my own.
If I provide my own parts (rods, pistons, bearings and bolts), this is what they would charge.

Disassemble $25.00
Bore & hone $225.00
Deck block $100.00
Grind crank if needed $95.00
Resize connecting rods $60.00
Assembly $175.00

Are these rates competitive? Does anybody know what their quality of work is like?

If your going to have a machine shop do your engine work, make sure they are reputable. I've gotten two rebuilt engines from two different shops, from one it didn't even run and the other, misfire like crazy...one of the guys came and grinded down the hardened tip on the valve because he cut to much on the cylinder head..

$680 is cheap, that's around the price i paid for those two engines...i mentioned earlier. when i paid $950 it didn't come with any problems.
edit: 950 was for long block, not short which i think your doing.

you should not go on price alone..if the engine builder has no experience with the VQ, then you might run into issues....
i'm surprised they actually quote rates like that, especially when they dont even have the engine in house to look at the conditions...

Nothing wrong with searching out cheaper options though. Like you said, just make sure they have experience with the VQ.
But from the looks of it, Eddings Engine mainly deals with domestics. After searching around it looks like they have experience doing other import model builds such as the EVO.
We'll see...I'm gonna call them and do some probing.
