Walter Payton. Easily, Sweetness was the greatest athlete I've ever witnessed, he had moves that could juke anyone out of their pants, even better than Barry Sanders. He could also power rush the middle, getting those critical and hard fought 2-3 yards needed for a new set of downs. Off the field, Payton was class and dignity personified.
A very close second would be Mario Lemieux. Super Mario had puck skills that I had never before witnessed (I once saw a practice where Lemieux puckhandled the biscuit with only one hand on the twig without looking down all the while skating the full length of the ice). Unlike Gretzky, he could also play a power game, dishing out some ferocious hits and checks.

Umm, No. Sweetness was better at certain things, including power running and pass catching...but no way could he be more elusive than Barry. I saw both in person at least once a year as I went to every Buc's home game.
I agree 100%. The dude is a beast. And only getting better.
I was errorneous to leave Lance out. My top 3 list are pretty much equals, with Lance in there too.
I also forgot Mike Barrowman. Not only did he have the world record in the 200 breast, he had the top 13 times, ever.
Then when he was done with swimming, he won a world rowing competition. That's an athlete.

I think that Barry Sanders was the best, most talented running back ever.
Lance Armstrong hands down in my opinion. Jordan had 6 championships...but Lance won the Tour de France 7 times...in a row...after cancer.
Tony, Michael Phelps is DEFINITELY a baller. That's a good choice as well. Phelps>Spitz AND Thorpe
I think a definition of "athleticism" is needed. In my definition, Lance is NO WHERE near the athlete that MJ is..Heart of a champion, well conditioned of course, but not athletically.
MJ is at or near the top of my list. Id also add Carl Lewis, Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Ken Griffey Jr, and Bo Jackson.
I guess that all depends on your opinion of athleticism. Michael Jordan could jump like a maniac and Lance Armstrong could cover a total 10,000 feet plus in elevation changes over the course of 100+ miles in a couple hours
Agree to disagree. Not taking away anything from Jordan, the man was an absolutely incredible athlete, but like you said, it's all in the definition.

Not athletic? Are you serious? do you understand the atheticism that is required to race in the Tour De France?
Miles: 2241
Duration: three weeks
123,900 - calories burned by a rider in the course of the Tour
324,000 at 60rpm, 486,000 at 90rpm - number of pedal strokes taken per rider over the Tour
...
Athlete.. Lebron James. I don't think there's anyone out there that can compare with his athleticism, strength, length, talent, quickness, etc.. list goes on and on. By far the best athlete in any of today's sports.

Where in my post did I not "not athletic"? Hes definitely a superior athlete, just not on MJ's level IMO. Superior conditioning and strength out the a$$...Lance is definitely an athlete, I just dont put him in my top 5 or 6.
