triathlon bicycles

finished my first triathlon and i have to say i am addicted. already signed up for a 2nd one.

however its difficult to be in the fat tire division using a XC mountain bike with 150 mm of travel on a fork and seeing people blow by on a carbon frame tri bike...

anyone know of any sites that might sell used tri bicycles? besides the obvious ebay and craiglist which are a pain.

I found a Bianchi Giro 2003 in great condition for $300 on craigslist. Bike originally retailed for $1499, and the owner kept it in great shape. So, Craigslist can be good.

On a related note, how did your first tri go? I'm currently training for mine; I'm going to do a half (70.3) in San Diego in April, but as preparation, I doing an Olympic in September, and maybe some others before the half.

Bianchi are great bikes. I guess craig list is a route i will take. i just spent alot on full suspension XC bike so want to limit my tri bike purchase.

you are doing a half, wow that is impressive. you must be in kick ass shape. best of luck. this was my first tri and like i said i am addicted. i am signed up for 2 more sprints now one in 4 weeks thanks to friends and considering an olympic in october.

as far as how i did....i am little disappointed. it was my biking that really sucked.

sprint tri
1/4 mile swim - 7:30 min
12 mile bike - 43:20 min (HORRIBLE - mountain bike on road sucks)
3 mile run - 26:33 min
Total 1:21 hr

winner time 48 min

i would invest in a ROAD bike if your just starting out in triathlons.

they are alittle bit different in the way your body is positioned but they are very comfortable and are multiuse. you have to take into account different things when you are buying a bike like components, height and materials the bike is made of (aluminum is lighter but usually good for short distances bc it doesnt absorb the road well, steal is good for long bikes bc it absorbs the road but is heavier, or carbin fiber which is light but can break down faster)

i have been on a tri bike a few times and its completly different then a road bike. it is not a bike you will WANT to train on. i would suggest one after you get into tri's more and have it as a race bike and train on it for race scenarios.

i train on a 2003 trek 5200 and its my second trek and i love it. i mainly went with trek to support lance armstrong (who was a swimmer and triathlete before he killed the tour).

DO go to a bike store that deals mainly in road/tri bikes so they can fit you to a bike. especially if you are going to buy one later from ebay.

Dude almost 17 mph average on a mountain bike, even for just 12 miles is hugely impressive. You will be a beast on a road bike.

What frame size do you think you would be? I check cl every so often and will keep a look out for you if you want.

Also, it is probably a good time to shop around at bike shops since they will be clearing out the 2008 models now.

And where can I get info for the triathlons? Maybe ill give one a shot eventually.

www.usatriathlon.org

clicky pow!

that is the governing body for USAT. there are probably some sites specific to your area, being in fl there SHOULD be one.

i know USAT wanted me to come train at the OTC in Orlando, there should be a good tri community up there at least.

I'm moving to Idaho, and there is a HUGE population of triathletes out there. you flordia ppl are lucky bc you can compete in tri's year round.

beast - you don't even know. so out of curiousity...yesterday i rode on my friends cannondale road bike, 56 frame:

14 miles - 38.1 min - the pace came out to 2.7 min per mile.

this was my first time riding a distance like this on a road bike. god i could run a so much easier after that....

I am going to measure myself exactly this saturday and post here. the 56 frame felt good.

I've been doing tri's for a while now and I have to say unless you're looking to make a career out of it, a road bike will do the job just fine. I usually average between 22 and 23mph during the tris on my Specialized Roubaix Elite without any fancy aero bars.

It's amazing how many more people are getting out and doing these races. IMHO they are the best thing you can do for your body. Screw marathons...way too hard on your legs.

Trix congrats on getting out there and tearing it up. Your times are very respectable for a beginner. You should head out here to Chicago next August for the Accenture Chicago Tri it's the biggest and best run in the US, and I love doing it.

thanks

i have 2 more tri's this month (sprints)

then i am going to buy a road bike or a tri. the reason i am leaning towards a tri is because i want do some olympic tri's next year. and maybe attempt a half iron man.

right now i was looking at an internet motobecane but after reading alot and friends telling me i think i will put in the extra 300-400 into it and buy a felt. i have to shop around and i have time. my olympic tri will be beginning of next year.

i actually really really want to do the Xterra in Arizona I belive or Nevada I can't remember where its held. for now florida is a haven for this. the last trilogy triathlon had 1500 people. which is a good chunk. its really been an AWSOME experience and i am really loving it. i have a group now (6 of us) that have done 2 of the races with me and a close friend do alot of bricks together so i am seeing huge improvement. my swim especially, i thought i was a chump and here i am comming in 2nd or 3rd on the swim.

my 3rd tri is different its 750 yards swim, 10 mile bike, 3.5 mile run so i have to change my swim around a little but i think i should be ok.

congrats on the tri's. and best of luck to you.
