Whether he wins the French, is Roger Federer the greatest of all time?
I think Federer can already be called the greatest tennis player of all time, right now, without having won a 14th or 15th Slam, or the French Open. If he makes the career Slam, I don't think there can be any doubt.
Another good question some time down the road will be is Rafael Nadal the greatest player of all time - but I think that will be a few years down the road. He's already got 6 Slams, and while he dominates the French Open (but not this year), he has a win at Wimbledon and the Australian Open. Rafa can probably be called the greatest clay-courter of all time already, but, who knows if he'll ever enter that conversation of who is the greatest overall player of all time.

Federer is hurt by his competition. He doesnt have an Agassi/Courier/Chang to his Sampras. He doesnt have a Mats/Ivan/Jimmy to his McEnroe. Nadal is as close as he gets and hes pretty much a clay court specialist.

I'd have to agree with Lynch on this one. Even though Pete never won the French, his competition was better. We can't blame Roger for his lack of competition, but he'll go down as one of the best ever.

Pete never even got to the final in the French Open so I do not consider him the best (all around) player. Best on grass? Absolutely. Just not best ever.
If Roger wins this Sunday (he has to beat the guy that beat Nadal), then you can say he's the best ever.
