Anyone else intrigued about this year's draft? Besides Blake Griffin, you have like 6+ guys who can go anywhere from 2-14 with half or more of them potentially busts. Fun fun stuff to speculate about. Here are some of my thoughts about the players I've been following:
---------------------------------
Rubio: Nash without the jumpshot? Or is he a smarter but less athletic version of White Chocolate? Then there's also the Maravich comparison people keep talking about. PREDICTION: The skinny spaniard ends up a as a popular player because of his high basketball IQ and will probably end up as a backup on most teams, or a starter on the right team.
Flynn: Forget the height bias... w/ the proper speed, talent and athleticism the 6 foot and under guys have proven they can play. Plus he has that combination of floor-leader vibe and heart i like in point guards. PREDICTION: He contributes right away and will have one of the top 3 rookie seasons next year.
Evans: I like this kid despite the bad jumpshot. He'll need to make some changes to his game to transition to the NBA though, but at 19 w/ his size he could develop real well. PREDICTION: He will turn into a sparkplug backup on a team who won't ask too much of him, or as a specialty player who may develop the ability to punish smaller point guards.
Curry: His quick release on his J and his range makes me think he'll excel playing a Reggie Miller/Rip Hamilton type of role at the point guard position is the best use of his talents, although that would mean you would need someone at the 2 or 3 to run the point instead. Like most less-athletic scorer/shooters, his success in the NBA will probably depend on how well he adjusts to the taller players guarding him on the wing. PREDICTION: With the right team, he has an outside chance developing into a popular scorer/borderline star but is more likely to end up as a specialty player.
Jennings: AI 2.0? or is it S.Telfare 2.0? IMO the biggest question mark out of all the point guards this year. Dude is insanely quick and has extremely high potential, but imo needs to sit behind a veteran or two for one or two years and put some bulk to maximize his potential. Young, competitive but arrogant guards tend to whither more often than blossom in the NBA system but my gut tells me this kid will make it. PREDICTION: He'll be a late bloomer who will start getting better in his 2nd-3rd years, and can be a gem on any team that plays the transition game well.
