I just thought, due to the bizarre nature of the accident, that it might be of interest to the general forum crowd instead of only those that peruse the sports section.
It happened to me when I was 16 in my parents basement. I was home alone so all I could do was keep swallowing until my adam's apple popped the 250lbs off of my throat and onto the floor..

One of my dad's co worker's sons was benching like 350 and both his shoulders dislocated at the same time.........
Weight rooms are very dangerous and it amazes me how many people go and work out without a spotter, or try to push as much as they can to show off. The human body can only take so much......

I agree with you to some extent... lifters shouldn't try to show off in the gym.
But a spotter can only help you lift the weight when you need some assistance - not when you're completely unable to move the weight. When your co worker's son's shoulders dislocated at the same time, there wasn't much that a spotter could do about it. He must have dropped the weight suddenly and completely, and once it fell, he would have been unable to provide any assistance for the spotter. At that point, the spotter would have had to either awkwardly deadlift the weight or, more likely, come around from behind the lifter and strip the weight off the bar.
Same thing with Stafon Johnson - the spotter could not have anticipated that the weight would slip out of his hand completely - and even if he did, it would have been really difficult to control 275 lbs on its way down that rapidly.
That being said, there is a difference between a gym buddy "givin ya a spot" and someone who is actually paying attention and spotting a lifter properly.
Maybe I'm wrong about this. If I am, more experienced lifters like Phreaktor will correct me.
^Opathal, 275 is a weight I work with alone because I know what my failure point is. He had a spotter, but there was nothing that could be done if the weight slipped out of his hands. If anything, he didn't have his thumbs locked.
No one is curious about me popping 250 off my throat with my adam's apple?
i am disappoint

I was spotting a guy doing close-grip bench presses and while he was trying to set the weight in his palms, it came out of his hands and landed full force on his throat. Thankfully we had just knocked the weight down to 135, but it happened so fast that I couldn't stop it. I basically caught it after it bounced off of his throat. As a side note, if ANYONE thinks they can catch a dropping 275 pounds, you're sadly fooling yourself. Either that or you're an absolute monster and frighten small children.

Maybe just bad luck, but that is a lot of weight. I still would work the bar at that weight. Risk/reward......theres a lot of risk there.
Guess he was using the so-called "power grip" where the thumbs aren't wrapped around the bar. I used to use this back in high-school but have reverted back to wrapping my thumbs around the bar. Never really thought about the bar falling out of my hands though.
