I was in the Vellaggio mall when they announced the winner (its quite literally, right next to Al Gharafa stadium) . All of Doha went apeshit. Very odd seeing people driving up and down in the streets and honking horns, waving flags, hanging out of their cars...etc It was one big party, and this is a fairly conservative muslim country.
Im curious to see what they do with the torch thats also next to the stadium. Lemme post up a few pics of how the stadium looks right now.

To help win the bid, they promised to spend something like 5 billion dollars to build up their infrastructure. Which hopefully will include a better public transit system. This place sucks going anywhere without a car.

They were really a bad choice for 2022. It should have been USA or Japan.

What Nuki said and the amount of games that will be played makes it necessary.

After the tournament, however, the main stadiums will be dismantled and sent to poorer countries, leaving the 1.7million Qataris with smaller venues.

Care to explain this? The place is tiny so time couldn't possibly be the issue. Do their roads suck or something?
What else is a negative is Qatar banned alcohol to citizens. So FIFA is trying to work out "designated drinking areas". If you get caught drunk in public there even with what FIFA wants you will either be arrested or deported.

Japan offered to broadcast full scale 3D games in stadiums around the world so people could watch the games without having to travel. I think that's pretty awesome. Should have been Japan.

Well, there is still a lot undeveloped area out here. The country is really just now modernizing in many sense. Its kinda like Dubai was about 10-12 years ago when they first went crazy building up.
There are sections where the buildings are amazing and then a few hundred yards away, looks like downtown Kabul (which is to say, very third world). Ive been here almost two weeks and I can already see whats wrong with this country. The public transit is horrid. Not to mention the alcohol thing mentioned earlier. This truly was a poor choice indeed. This country is too.. dare I say it... muslim for such an event. Wait, I meant conservative.
Qatar has a lot going for it, but all the fun is indoors. You travel to it because out in public you're expected to keep to the social norms of a typical muslim country. The events are going to have masses of people outside, drinking, partying...etc. I can't help but think its going to be a huge social clash. Thats why I think this will be somewhat of a disaster from a cultural standpoint.Even with the proposed beer gardens, if they don't loosen up some of the laws here, I can see endless amounts of trouble.
Oh and did I mention, the Qatari people are worse than the rich spoiled brats of Dubai? Dont get me started on how ****ed up the social strata is here. Imagine the horrible tales you read in school about medieval England when serfdom was popular. Basically, thats what its like here. Americans are the middle class knights, while the Qatari's are the rich nobles who treat everyone like dirt. And why? Simply because they were born here in a rich country. Its rather disgusting actually. They put up with us Americans because our military is here protecting their spoiled little asses. (and by little I do mean little, most of them are either 6' + and weigh in the 140 region, or are 5'6" and weigh 250+ and I'm not talking muscle wise. Seriously I dont think I've seen one Qatari that looks like he knows what the inside of a gym is about.)
Good place to visit, and Im seriously thinking of putting a bid in here myself. But like Dubai, if you're not rich, you're nobody. I imagine some people would hate it here, I think I could live here but only a few years max.

I didn't think Qatar was the best choice, but I knew they would make some crazy awesome stadiums. I watched a video that showed a the first 5, but not the last few. If the stadiums and everything end up looking as impressive as they are supposed to, I think I might want to go to this World Cup.

I wonder what S. Africa is using their WC stadiums for now..I can only imagine what the cost is to keep them running.
A lot of their premier league clubs are planning to use them if not already by approx 2012. A few of the stadiums were already in use and they just built onto them rather than create new ones.
