I have worked for a GM dealer for 11 years. On October 21st we were notified that the dealership was closing on Oct. 30th. I have passed out about 15 resume's and gotten a few calls.
Well today I got a call from the owner of the local dodge dealership and was presented with a job offer at his JD Byrider lot. This owner owns 6 dealerships in SC and is a down to earth guy.
Now the issue was when we discussed the salary. I will be making $9500 less per year if I take this job, but they do have good benefits. I was also told that I would get a review after being there 6 months and then again at 1 year.
Now I am transfering to another store within the auto group that I am in now but the fate of it has not been decided yet and no one knows how long it will last.
Wow, that's a hard decision to make...given the fact that Dodge is not doing very well either. Who's to say that you wont be in the same situation again in the future?? If it were me, I'd take the transfer and hope for the best, but keep looking for new employment. At least you'll be making the same salary for the time being I guess? Good luck!

Thats true, but this is a saturn dealership that I am transfering to. I dont know how long it will last with GM axing saturn. There is a chance to transfer to another department if I do take the new job.
I'd still take the transfer option rather than go with Dodge JDByrider...But still seek new employment. What's your line of work? Sales, or mechanic etc...?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
SC housing prices are cheap as hell.
I lived in Columbia, SC. If you need help in relocation let me know.
JD Byrider? huh, I thought that was just an Indiana thing (its HQ'd here). FYI, those places stay busy, havent seen one fold yet. Solid used cars with good warranties and support.

I thought Saturn was already "toes up" when the Penske deal fell apart? I guess they will need to keep servicing the cars on the road tho?

ALL of the Saturn dealers near me are already gone. Just space waiting to be re-rented by another failed car company. But yes you are correct. there is no Saturn.
1) +1 to what everyone else is saying: Saturn's future is dim at best ("nonexistent", more accurately).
2) "$9500 less per year" is what percentage of the overall pay?
3) Will you have to move? And if so, can/will you be happy in your new location?
$9500 is about a 25% pay cut. I wont have to move but me and the wife can carpool b/c she works about 3 miles from there. I know he has like 6 or 7 dealerships including a Harley Davidson dealer.
The pay cut will hurt for a while but it is with what I think is a stable company. He also told me that all the managers including myself will fly to the JD Byrider HQ in indiana every quarter and to milwaukee every year for meetings. From what I have been told JD Byrider is very loyal to his dealers.

So with all that info, I'd suggest to take the Dodge job (seems you were leaning that way anyway).
Between Dodge and Saturn, we all know that Saturn's days are numbered. Dodge still has an opportunity to turn things around (but they'll have to do so quickly).
A 25% pay cut is pretty significant, but not insurmountable. Some lifestyle changes/choices will definitely have to be made, but on the other hand, you'll get more "bonding type" with your wife.
Like you were saying, I'd trade away a higher income for more economic stability any day.

I feel for you. This seems to be the norm now work for less. If I were you I would stay with the group you work for and look for a better paying job. From what you posted you are not making big bucks now and with that big of a cut all I can say is WOW. You will have one heck of a tough time living on 30k a year. After cost of living what would you have to spend on other bills? This is whats going on all over . Only gov workers get a pay increase the rest of us sloths have to forage in the dumpsters . You do not see middle class much anymore either rich or below 40k a year. I wish you the best of luck because it looks like you are going to need some.

Thanks guys, keep the advice coming. Right now i am at mid 30's for 52.5 hours a week and hardly no lunch.
Im not really worried about the house payment or my wife's car payment, its the credit cards that I am concerned about. I thought that if I take the job that I could call the credit car companies and have them put me on a hardship program for a while. Plus, I have one loan that gets paid by the loan company if I do become unemployeed b/c I took out the extra ins. for that.
I do know that it takes me a few weeks to adjust to a new job where ever I go. I do want to make a good impression and get my foot in the door and really impress the new boss, that is if I do take the job.

If you don't mind my asking, how much credit card debt do you have, roughly?
