Has anyone done wheel bolts?
Hey there. I'm fairly new to the forum and looking around a bit, I didn't see anything on anyone ever fitting wheel bolts to a Z instead of using studs and lugs.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, BMW's use a wheel bolt to hold the wheel on that threads into the hub. Instead of having studs stick on of the hub and screwing nuts on to hold to wheel in place.
I was just curious if anyone has tried it or if I was going to be the first test subject.

I used 30mm Ichiban hub centric spacers, so that the spacers are already the thickness of the OEM bolts. No rub. IMHO

I personally hate bolts versus stud & lugnut..... much easier to center/hang the wheel on the studs and fasten than using the hub to center the wheel over the attachment holes. But hey.... just me.
And yes, I have one car in the fleet (and had many other Euro cars) that use that set up....for whatever reason they do.... ugh.

Brady, changing your Z to wheel bolts will not be easy or straightforward. The hub uses a press-in stud, so if you remove them there will not be any threads in the hub to accommodate wheel bolts.
Over in Europe I’ll bet the car forums are clogged with questions regarding how to change over to ‘super cool’ studs and lug bolts.

Did you have to say this? Did that make you feel better? Why do I have to buy a euro cars just because I like some of their ideas. I'm sure not every single idea you've ever come across is Japanese and no one is telling you to buy another car.
Anyways. The why. Well I don't think there is much of a difference either in advantages or disadvantages other than just convenience and that wheel bolts have a way less tendency to strip or break when some *** overtorques them. As for convenience and the "studs are so much easier to mount with" conversation, the difference in time it takes between the two is minor. I also happen to be swayed into wanting it because I work for BMW and see it all day. I am very up for having a unique car and that's what I think is the best part about personalizing a car is to have someone that many people won't dare to do or don't want to. Granted if this is to way too much work for some bolts, I'll scrap the idea in general.
I just like the look of the bolts, and the idea of them. But I'm won't waste my time for an idea either to keep things simple.
That's why I was just curious if anyone else had ever tried this before.

Im sure it can be done, but it will definitely require time and money to do. You would have to custom thread your hub as Jennifer stated.
Im on the bandwagon that I prefer lug nuts (I hate rotating wheels on my girlfriend Beetle). And as Jennifer stated, those forums are full of people trying to convert to lug studs/nuts.
If you like them better, I say go for it! I would recommend buying another set of hubs to work with so you don't have to put your car out of commission for the time being

Since Nissan designed our hubs to use press-in studs rather than bolts, it's a much better idea to stick with that concept. If you must upgrade this, I'd suggest going with a better material in the studs themselves. My SCCA T3 Z uses ARP studs and they are very strong and reliable.

It definitely is a unique idea, but it seems like a lot of work for something that serves the same purpose. (IE: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it").. but, do you.

When I say I don't like that attachment method, it's only because when I mount those, I have to sit on the floor with the wheel balanced between my calves to align the holes to start the threads in. Omuhgawd, that's waaaaay too much work!!
You do realize I'm kidding, right? Right??

I couldn't take your question seriously as a quick google search would have been a lot more efficient and effective vs creating a thread on this. Probably took more effort to create a thread. I've seen way too many people drop in and post threads that are quite useless/troll-like over the years. You only had 1 previous post and more than likely wouldn't follow through with this idea, oh right. Carry on.

I'm sorry. I was keeping an open mind about this but you should do it...I want you to do it. Convert the 350z to wheel bolts. It will go down in history to be arguably the stupidest most pointless modification done to the 350z...in fact of any car that runs studs.
If you are worried about stud strength go buy a quality set of aftermarket ARP studs.

Bingo. My brother who has a VW Golf R just did the conversion to studs himself because the bolt system sucks. Much harder to mount the tire. Studs are way easier and thus IMHO better. If you remove wheels often (like track days) then this becomes pretty important.
If you like the look of bolts then get some racing lugs with open ends. I've seen some that have an allen key just like those Bimmers use.
