Need help deciding - Z Track or Formula Ford ?
Hi guys,
It's a weird question, but I just can't decide on what to get !
I just moved to Columbus OH and I looking for the best way to improve on my driving skills. How accessible are the race tracks ? Just to Lap ? How about driving eds ? With a street car or a full race car ?
I'm looking at getting either a 350Z and do minimal mods to it (mainly brakes) and do track days and Solo 1. Or a used Formula type race car and SCCA driver license ?
Here's some background about me, just so you guys know where I'm comming from. I'm Canadian and just got back from 2 years in Europe. So I don't know how things work here in the USA.
I've lapped my Impreza 2.5RS regularly during these two years. Let's just say that I've outgrown that car and I need something more challenging.
I'd greatly appreciate your toughts on my dilema.

If I track regularly, I would consider something lighter like a Miata or the S2K over the Z, and use it on the street too. If money is no object, get the Z for street and the Formula Ford for track. Keep in mind you will be competing against cars in the same class as yours.

Despite the fact that you intend to use either car on the race-track, these two cars really have nothing in common. If you want a "race car" buy the FFord. If you want a trackable street car, buy the Z. The FFord as a personal investment seems like alot of money unless you intend to spend lots of time at the track. If you do occasional track days and want something with some potential on the track, but that you could drive home afterwards, get the Z.

I'm looking to get the most track time. Would it be possible to do 10-12 track days a year with a street car here ? My question comes down to finding out what will allow me to lap the most ? A race car or a week-end lapper ?
Those of you guys that lap their Z's, how often can you go to the track ?

I got the Z and have a tow vehicle on order (2005 Xterra).
The Z is a great track car -- but if you have the time, desire and skills -- I think I would opt of a pure race car.
Eventually I plan to stop tracking the Z and retire it to purely pleasurably road excursions, then get a properly prepped race car (probably a NASA SE-R cup Sentra or an NASA SRX prepped 240sx w/ SR20DET). But I need a bit more experience and need to get a race license.
BTW, I have done 2 events since November -- and have another lined up on January 15th. But I live in California where track events are easy to find.
Mid-Ohio should have plenty of events scheduled.
