It's pretty obvious that anyone who compares (seriously) the Z to a 911 hasn't driven a Porsche (owning a 924S doesn’t count). If all you want is straight line acceleration, get a dodge viper or a vette! If you want to drive perhaps the best engineered sports car in the world .... Only then should you get a Porsche 911. Try driving both cars on an empty back road and you'll see what I mean they cannot be compared. The vipers and vettes you're comparing to the 911 are running 8/10 cylinder engines with in most cases more than 150% of the displacement of the Porsche 6. They then edge out the Porsche by less than a car length in 0-60's and they’re superior cars ..... I can't believe this thread has reached 4 pages long!

Hey, different cars exist for different wants. If you want a pure racer, get a Lotus Elise! If you want a GT Luxo sports car, the 911 isn't a bad choice. Or if you'd prefer a GT Luxo sports car with great parts availablility and high American content, the Vette is it. Fast sports sedan? M5 or E55 comes to mind.
Bottom line is x is not greater than y necessarily. I guarantee you driving ABILITY makes a far greater difference that a car make's relative performance. How much you want to bet that Mario Andretti could beat you around the race track of your choice if he drove a 0-60 5 sec by the magazines car vs you in the 0-60 4.5 sec magazine car?
The guy who said that the Z is an all around sports car, not dominant in any one category but offering good but not great (or the greatest) performance got it on the money. It's the combination of value, looks, and performance that makes the Z desirable. It's not the end all in terms of anything, especially build quality. For me, I could have (and was thinking about buying a MB SL55) but I decided to not spend more money on another car that I don't get to drive all that much. I'm relatively happy with my decision.
Hey, have fun out there but be safe. The weather's nasty!
