I think most people have compassion for animals (especailly dogs compared to a rabbit, etc.) and no one is saying to drive down the road looking for dogs to run over. No one wants to kill a dog, and your reflex kicks in when anything crosses your path, and you want to swerve... but...
A friend of mine had the same thing happen. He swerved to avoid a dog, hit a telephone pole head on and nearly killed himself and all the people in the car. He was, as I am, an animal lover, howver he regretted not bracing and hitting the dog. You don't want to, but often it is the best thing to do... in a bad situation where the outcome isn't going to be good no matter what.

Well it was the start of an on ramp, so I knew that I had room to work with as far as swearving etc... without hitting someone, there's nobody else around. If this were on a residential street or something, I wouldn't have even thought about swearving like I did. Oh well, A merry Xmas to you all, forget about debating please, everyone would have acted in a different way.....

Sorry about the Z, hope you get it fixed soon.
Id never hit a dog in my Z, id rather run my Z into a pole, i mean i love my Z to death, but i love dogs more . The only thing ive ever killed in my Z is a squirrel, and it was either him or me heading into oncoming traffic, poor little guy, i was depressed the entire day.

Guys,
Here is a story that was scary. My wife and I took her Matrix to Home Depot one night. We saw a small dog running from the curb onto the street. My wife could not stop the car on time.
The next thing we heard was a dog rolling underneath our car and screaming. After one block, we pulled the car over to see if there was any blood (found none).
I drove back to the exact spot and found no dog.
As you know, the matrix has a body kit and cannot imagine how the dog can go underneath it (and stay alive).

I just want you to know that it makes me sick to hit an animal. However, if you drive, you will probably hit one. I have hit 2 cats and a squirrel. There was nothing I could do. It made me sick. But, come on, we do not live in a safe world where every living creature can live a full life with no pain. A dog WILL DIE eventually. Their lifespan is a whopping 10-20 years. If I am going too fast to swerve safely around a dog or small animal, I will hit it rather then taking the chance of wrecking or causing others behind me to wreck.

You ALWAYS take out the animal, NEVER swerve; especially at speed. The risks as a result of a swerve are greater.
And there is not excuse for an unleashed dog.

Same thing happened to me but it was a cat and in my Legend.
Was getting onto the freeway and a cat came running out in front of me, I lost the rear end and spun out. Luckily I only scraped the rear bumper and only needed paint.
I know worser things could have happened, but I just cant being myself to hit an animal.

For me it would depend on the speed...
At 60 or more I'd send lassie to heaven if I didnt have much room to move.
Less than that I'd try to avoid if there's room.

I think everyone has a different opinion. My point of view is all life is precious regardless if its a child or a dog. I even feel guilty when I kill bugs, I try not to if I can. I truly believe in karma. A car is replacable, money is just paper, I value any kind of life more than any kind of materialistic item. A life can never be replaced.

What the heck was the dog doing on the road in the first place? That's some irresponsible owner who deserves to have to deal with a dead dog because if it wasn't you, it's going to be some other guy in the same situation that is going to nail that dog.
I've learned from experience, if someone makes a left infront of you, hit it that guy, don't try to swerve cause if you hit something or someone else while making your avoidance manuever, it's your fault and you are liable. If I'm willing to hit person making a left when they're not supposed to, I'm sure as hell willing to hit a dog that doesn't belong on the road as well if safety or liability is an issue.
Sorry about your bumper, hope you get something really nice in it's place.

man that sucks duude... this morning on my way to work on I-35 north of dallas (lots of construction) i was driving, with a construction wall to my immediate left, and a big *** semi in the right lane next to me...and the in the middle of my lane there is a a huge tire tread from a big semi just sitting there.. i had no other place to go... the damage : passenger side wheel well is gone, crack in front bumper and i think i might need a new resevoir for my winshield wiper fluid..
i would have taken out the dog... which is more impt.. me or the mutt? from what people have been sayin on the the thread.. seems like all these dogs that have gotten up and lived to die another day. SO IS THE DOG REALLY OGNNA DIE IF U HIT IT....???

Everyone says "Hit the Dog"....
By the time your brain processes what it "is" that just darted out in front of you, YOU'RE ALREADY SWERVING.
If you have enough time to figure out what it is, you should be able to stop.
If something darts in front of my car, my first reaction is to jerk the wheel to avoid it. It's called a REFLEX. Man...the next time it could be a kid running out in front of you...and I hope for some of your sakes, your reflexes take over your actions....

If the OP had died in the accident that resulted because he chose to swerve and the story were being told by a survivor in the car, I'll bet the tone of this thread would be different. When animals enter the road, it's always a matter of "worst case scenario" rather than money vs. life. It's a matter of your well-being over the animals. As difficult a pill as it is to swallow, I'll take my own safety over that of the animal every time (and I will feel no sorrow for the owners who just lost their family pet at the hands of their own negligence). Sorry Fido. Sports cars were not meant to leave the road, and when they do, the results are almost always unpredictable. Unfortunately, hitting the animal has fairly predictable results. It's the nature of the times in which we live.
