Yeah like the cost of performance parts and available aftermarket companys.
There is a guy on this board that traded in his 02 M3 for a Z mainly because of the cost of modding it. Believe me I love the M3, it's a beautiful car, but it's not really modder friendly, at least with how much I make.

Newer M3's have 333hp to our 287-300hp. They handle great and are a formidable competitor at the track (road course). I do a lot of track days and the m3 is the car I respect the most. Even over Porsches, STI's or EVO's. Unfortunately, its hard to drive more than a mile without seeing an M3. And the crunch on the pocket book from owning and modding can't be overlooked. If you think our motor is maxed out, try a 3.2L pushing 333hp!

Shrug a M3 is a step up in speed, workmanship, quality, engineering, prestige etc thus the 20,000-27,000 difference in price. Ironically I traded in my 530i for my Z.

Latest report I read was that the European autos were giving more problems than the others. I had always thought the Mercedes was at the top of class, etc!

The fact that the Z is not the fastest car on the road should be no surprise to anyone. The M3 is an excellent car, and while every car has it's problems, I'm sure it has no more problems than the Z.
Price wise, the M is in a different class than the Z, as is demonstrated by purchase price, mod-price, maintenance costs, etc. I do not think that the little extra performance you get for the huge price difference is worth it, which exemplifies the fact that the Z is about the best bang for the buck in the mid-price sports car market today.

great m3 motor??
i found this after going to the dealer to have my x5 in for service:
SI B 11 04 02
JUNE 2003
SERVICE ENGINEERING
THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SUPERSEDES S.I. DATED DECEMBER 2002.
SUBJECT
S54 ENGINE - EXTENDED WARRANTY
MODEL
E36/7, M ROADSTER/COUPE WITH 554 ENGINE FROM 02/01 UP TO 06/02
[NEW] E46, M3 COUPE/CONVERTIBLE WITH 554 ENGINE FROM 03/01 UP TO 09/03 CHANGE
SITUATION
THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTED CASES OF DAMAGE TO THE CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS RESULTING IN 554 ENGINE FAILURE
TYPICAL CUSTOMER COMPLAINT WOULD BE: "ENGINE KNOCKING OR RATTLING NOISE".
AFTER INTENSIVE AND THOROUGH INVESTIGATION IS WAS CONCLUDED THAT DUE TO CONTAMINATION OF THE S54 ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM DURING ENGINE ASSEMBLYT IN COMBINATION WITH INFAVORABLE TOLERANCES IN THE OIL PUMP, THE CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS CAN BE OVERHEATED WHICH MAY LEAK TO THERI DAMAGE AND POSSIBLE ENGINE FAILURE ON M3 COUPE/CONVERTIBLE VEHICLES PRODUCED FROM OCTOBER 2001 THROUGH FEBRUARY 2002.
basically all m3's thru those years had the motor swapped. when i was at the dealer the service advisor told me i was lucky to have my car serviced the same day since all the lifts were tied up w/motor swaps. the recall letter goes on and there are letters from bmw customers about pissed off consumers purchasing "top of the line" vechicles and they need a new motor faster than a 15k hyundai. i got to talk to one of the techs and he said this is the first time hes ever seen a recall this large. the 3 series bmw has been on car and drivers top ten list for years, but im glad whoever makes the "top ten" list takes into account the relaibility of the engine that locks up after one year. but i've had other bmw's in the past and honestly this is the only time i've ever heard of premature engine failure. and this was just another reason why i purchased the g coupe over the m3.
