Nissan Pre-Order letter.....it's over.

My dealer faxed this to me today. Is anyone else disappointed Nissan was only able to sell ~6500 cars in five months? I know this was a rather stealthy campaign but that is a far cry from the 2500 cars/month pace they are hoping for when the general sales begin.

Tim,

WHere did you get the ~6500 number from?

robbyn Jun 18, 2002 06:18 AM

According to an article that came out last week in (I think) Autoweek (it has been posted here) Nissan had sold 6500 Zs by last Monday. Considering their stated goal was to sell 7000 pre-order Zs, I would say they came pretty close because they probably sold several hundred in the last week.

pointfivezero Jun 18, 2002 06:18 AM

VQ is right....as of Autoweek presstime last week, it was 6200.

Scafremon Jun 18, 2002 06:34 AM

Wow!

It's over!

I don't know about the rest of you who pre-ordered, but this is kind of exciting news. I feel like we have reached a milestone in our pre-order adventure.

The Pre-Ordering is Over!
Long Live the Pre-Orderers!!!!!!!

Thanks for posting that fax Tim.

My Name is Jeff, and I am a pre-orderer.

Goober Jun 18, 2002 06:38 AM

The pre-order club huh? Boy, I got in just in time. Good thing I asked about it this weekend.

I preordered at 3:43 PM today. Anyone later?

Great Post, thank you.

It does feel like a club now!!

It seems like the pace of orders did pick up as time went on,
but 6500 doesn't seem like a big start. Thats fine with me !!

Are you kidding? 9/10 people who ask, "what's that car you're getting?" look at me as if I'm from another planet when I say, "the 350Z." Once we start to get our cars and drive the piss out of them, the general public will know about it and they will want it. Look at what happened to the G35 sedan. IIRC they sold like 3,700 units the first month and set an all time Infiniti monthly sales record.

6500 isn't many? My wife drives an IS300 sportcross, and they have sold less than 1000 of them since october. Of course, Lexus hasn't advertised either, but they have only been producing 5-25 of them per month

exsilio Jun 18, 2002 07:57 AM

I just got my confirmation order today. I am not disappointed with the results at all.

exsilio Jun 18, 2002 08:09 AM

Only time will tell. I'm not worried about it.

ZThang Jun 18, 2002 08:58 AM

So if my dealer didn't fax the order to Nissan by today, I don't get the car?? I think i just got screwed!! Damn dealers.

Pre-order numbers

Remember, it is potentially better for the dealers to NOT have to sell Z's as pre-orders. If Nissan was putting pressure on them to sell at MSRP, it is possible that once the car is out there it will sell above MSRP. That is good for the dealers. Edmunds.com is already listing the value of the car as about $2K or so over MSRP.

exsilio Jun 18, 2002 11:17 AM

Agreed. In fact my local dealers are all talking $5-$10k over MSRP.

Special Preorder Keys!!!!

I think we should all get special preorder Keys with our # of of 6500.....that would be pretty sweet....

totally agree, remember that this is only a preorder, that means 6500 people out there without even seen the car or drive one and they order it just because they trust themself, that's A LOT man~

Preorders

Yeah, this isn't like pre-ordering a DVD movie or something. To be honest, I was pretty skittisk pre-ordering a car I had never driven. If I hadn't been able to get a refundable deposit, I wouldn't have done it.

Exsillio, if the car is really going for 5-10K over MSRP this fall, I think we will all be really happy with our purchase. I would be surprised if that happened, but hey, look at the S2000 and the PT Cruiser.

skimark Jun 18, 2002 11:55 PM

Not disappointed at all. The entire country is fixated on large and ugly SUV's. I really like the idea of not a ton on the road as long as Nissan still thinks sales justify continuing production and future development.

Zonedogg Jun 19, 2002 01:58 AM

I just contacted nissan consumer affairs and they said the pre order is going to continue until sometime in july????????????????????????????/

Zonedogg Jun 19, 2002 02:07 AM

she also said that all the pre-orders should be shipped at the same time regardless of order date...she said pre-order is pre-order...she did confirm the aug-nov date as if a 4 month gap is hard to fill...
