carbon fiber driveshaft Q's.
I was thinking about the carbon fiber driveshaft on the z. cars lose about 15% hp from the engine to the wheels, do you think the power lose will be less because the shaft is lighter.which would mean more power to the wheels. also what other cars out there have carbon fiber shafts? any ideas

yes, most reports are a 5-10 less hp loss. I don't think any cars come from the factory with cf, but they are big for aftermarket muscle cars for drag racing.

a couple of good sites for info:

I'm kind of surprised CF shafts never caught on with the aftermarket crowd. Drivedrain loss can be a ***** and a lighter shaft would seem like a good solution. I'm not sure how much one would cost, likely more on the high side, but you would think there would be a market.

one of the articles I read said about 3x that of aluminum, so about $900-1000.

CF driveshafts are good, strong and lightweight. Impressive Nissan would do this from the factory.
Although, I honestly don't know what to think about CF driveshafts in general. I've seen a turbo AWD DSM have its CF driveshaft shatter like glass on a dragstrip. Must've gotten the bad one of the bunch? Or just maybe because he's putting down too much AWHP. *shrug* |
