Speedbumps in 2nd?

Hey guys, i am a new 350Z driver and i was wondering (after i did a search offcourse :p), do you guys shift all the way back to the first gear to go over speedbumps, or do you leave it in 2nd, so the car pulls like **** but it is alot smoother to go over the bump?

Any opinions on this?

what's so hard about putting it into first. i don't have a z but on both of my cars i slow enough to have to put in the clutch and use first to get over the bump.

side note - a couple of us are flying into amsterdam may 5. have any suggestions or feel like meeting up with a couple of guys? heh haven't planned the itinerary yet but we're looking at berlin and prague, and maybe one other city.

Nah it's more "bumpy" in first you know what i mean? hmm maybe it's just me because my friends never notice it as well, but i just feel like the 2nd gear is smoother...

Yeah sure i'd love to meet up with you guys, show you a little bit of amsterdam... some redlight district... some tourist atractions etc... Should be nice :)

between the drop and the kit, I don't do speed bumps.

NorCal350 04-08-2005 09:21 AM

good for you, i have about 8 to get to my house, and 3 of them are doubbles, god it sucks, cant wait to move, and it depends on the night, i usually do second, i find it to be smoother, but somethiems i do first if i go really really really slow

synth19 04-08-2005 09:53 AM

I usually do 2nd, why? because I'm usually moving and it's not pretty downshifting into 1st gear from 2nd. If I did use first gear to go over a speed bump, I would first have to come to a complete stop and then shift to 1st... People are downshifting to 1st gear here?????

GTNPU Z 04-08-2005 09:57 AM

I usually go over bumps on 2nd but if the bump is massive, I will have to go slower so I'll put it on 1st.

GWAPITO69 04-08-2005 09:57 AM

that depends on the speedbumps. if its a long speedbump i usually leave it in second but if its one of those shortbumps i put it in first.

It freaks me out too! Not good for the car... :icon32:

usually what i'll do is leave it in 2nd gear. But if the speedbump is too steep... i'll actually pop it into Neutral and slowly roll over it. Then when i get to the top of the bump, i'll pop it back into 2nd. Even tho my car is stock, it's a habit to take speedbumps slowly and sometimes even at an angle. The guys that have/had bodykits will know what i mean. The habit sticks with ya. :icon38:

It depends how high steep the speed bump is.

I almost stop before I drive over the speed bumps. A person walks faster than I do.

Yep. I know what you mean. I'm so use to driving with a kit on that when I drive even on a stock car, I'll take bumps or driveways at an angle ;).

Werd. Speed bumps, sudden inclines, driveways... all at an angle ;)

i barely shift down to the 1st unless im at a 'really..really..really' slow speed (3/4 mph) or a complete stop.

ANXIOUZ 04-08-2005 01:48 PM

I can't downshift into 1st unless I'm pretty much stopped completely. So I roll in 2nd.

tlewis 04-08-2005 02:48 PM

Depending on the size of the bump.... I like to put it in first and creep over the bump until the back tires are just touching, then hit the gas just a bit.....and leave nice skid marks across the speed bump.

I was in Prague in October. It's an amazing frickin place. Congrats on your trip.

Yeah, as a general rule, you don't shift into first when you're already moving.

sokudo9l6 04-10-2005 12:28 AM

even if you're going less than 1mph? Say you were stopping at a red light at night... then right before you come to a complete stop, the stoplight turns green. 1st or 2nd?
