Differential Clunk

Not 100% sure if this is coming from the Diff but I think it is as the sound seems to be coming from the rear of the car. When i first drive the car out of the garage this happens almost everytime. I shift into reverse and as I start backing out I'll hear an audible clunking noise. Only happens once and it seems to be when I first move the car. Normal?

Bump

There is a TSB out for this

Neo105 05-12-2005 11:41 PM

But where is it? And what is it? because TSB's dont work over here and i got it too :)

Z-INCOGNITO 05-13-2005 12:33 AM

Nismo LSD does it all the time

fahrenheit350 05-13-2005 07:45 AM

I'm clunkn' too.

Beaker02 05-13-2005 03:57 PM

I don't think the TSB is for this. The noise is a single clunk. Not an ongoing click while under accelleration.

ZsAllright 07-10-2005 07:21 AM

I have this too...three times in 2250 miles since new.

Happens in the garage, when just first begining to move (only in reverse gear)
(also, I only leave the car parked in neutral inside my garage)
It is a single "clunk", then operation is normal...doesn't do it again that day
Read somewhere that the ABS will "test" itself, sometimes with a noise?

The Z drives perfectly all the time except for this...

i had the exact same problem happen to me last week. i was leaving for work in the morning, put it to reverse and when it just started to move, there was a loud clunk and the car kinda just stopped, but didnt stall. felt like someone stmping on the brakes. put the car to neutral and tried it again and the same thing, a loud clunk and a stop. back to neutral and reverse for a third time and it was ok. so strange but it only happened that one morning last week. what could it be?

ZsAllright 07-11-2005 05:08 PM

Bump...."clunk"

Any ideas? I know if I take it to Nissan the "clunk" won't happen...

SekZee 07-11-2005 09:15 PM

its just the beginning, thats how it starts...single clunk...then another one...then one more... and then you hearing it 5 times during acceleration on each gear...

heh... just wait, or get it fixed, if you can prove it to the dealer that you actually have the clunk, coz at first there is no way to reproduce it hehe

=)))

edit

i just got mine fixed today, waited for the part for 4 days, and they instaled it in like 4 hrs.

btw, it took about 7 months for it to get into its full "clunkiness", i just ignored it for the past coupla months, but damn it gets worse!

"clunk" mystery solved....

Wash my Z in the driveway, dry it off and move it inside the garage.
The next time I move it, the "clunk" usually happens (one time only).

The reason? Rear brake disc rust made the pads "stick" to the disk
overnight...I discovered this by observing the rust, then moving my
Z by pushing it with the motor off so I could hear any noise..."clunk"

I have even had it happen after driving through a heavy rain, then
parking immediately in the garage. Rust was there the next day, and
a "clunk".

If I drive my Z right after the wash and clean the discs by using
the brakes normally, then no "clunk" the next day.

I am glad to have found the cause without having to take it to the
dealer...they have never seen the car since the day of delivery,
and I hope to keep it that way.

Thanks for the link!

I get a clunk too when I'm backing out of my driveway... It doesn't bother me really...

Hmm. Go figure.

I have an 03 350z and I was backing out of my driveway as well and yes same then one clunk after moving backwards a couple feet (maybe). Its almost as if I'm backing over some thing small but I'm not I'm gonna take a look to see if it's the brakes sticking a lil due to the could weather.

first happened after I jacked the front end up and I had the e-brake on. Lowered car when to back it out to go fro a drive and about 6inchs of backing up there it was one clunk.
only happens in reverse any ideas?

Clunk clunk

Same thing on my 2020 370z sport, less than 500 miles. Washed my car 2 days ago and parked it, went to leave this morning, threw it in reverse and within 3 ft it went clunk clunk, thought i had backed into something at 1st but when i popped out and took a look nothing was there. Has this been figured out?
