embargos get broken all the time..it happens..people run their stories before they should or the timing is off...it's not uncommon at all.

A while back when Apple released the updated iMac, Time Canada already has pics on newstands...boy did that piss off steve jobs.

Maybe Car and Driver had a deal with Nissan, They wanted to be the first to release the info, and the embargo ensured they would steal the spotlight first. When everyone releases their information, no one will care who was first.
