Yes, RPM is going to shoot up and bouce off the rev limiter like crazy again and again until speed decreases~! I've done 6th to 3rd accidently... That sucked...

the car will be more efficient of you go through the gears, the gears will give you the best ratio for the acceleration you are trying to acheive. When going from 1st to 5th, don't skip 2 and 4! The gears are there for a reason! when you go to 3rd from 11st, you are consuming more energy than you would if you used 2nd to get to 3rd.

its totally fine as far as the tranny is concerned. just match the best gear with the rpm and speed. I redlined in 1st gear once and went to 6th because i hit the speedlimit in 1st, the transition during the shift was very smooth. It really dosnt matter which gear you go to as long as you goto a gear that fits a given rpm/speed situation.

That is way too early to shift into 6th. You will experience problems later on with your tranny if you shift too early. That's like saying "I start in 4th gear"
I agree that if you match rpm, you will be okay, with skipping gears (drive it like it's ford focus zx3), but matching rpm @ idle is not a good idea.
