Gas gauge malfunction

So, these past two days i have been puttin 10$ of gas a day. Its get to about a quarter tank, but after about 3-4 miles it reads empty, jumps from 50ish miles to empty to 13 and less. Im forced to restart my car to get the gauge back up... any ideas?

Faulty gauge, sender or wire. Contact your dealer.

JoeyFyed 05-12-2006 01:29 AM

if thats true, i wont have time to make it to the dealer for a few days. Is the car safe to be driven in the meantime?

abstrakt 05-12-2006 02:29 AM

yes, its safe to be driven

man read my post about my DTE going from 57 to 0 in 5 seconds

I had a similar problem with mine. I'd fill the tank but still show 3/4 full on guage. After restarting the car 2-3 times it would magically show full. As I drove and used the gas up the guage would fluctuate +/- 1/8th of a tank. I took it over to the dealer under warranty (its an 04.5) and it turned out to be the "fuel sending unit" in the gas tank. According to the dealer there are 2, 1 in the tank and 1 in/around then engine. The one nearest the fuel tank was the one that was bad on mine.

So, to make matters easier with my dealership. Should i just explain the problem, or is there a TSB for this... its an 06 btw, at least i dont have tire feathering tho. =]

nissan fuel sending units are prone to malfunctions.

Mathys 05-13-2006 08:35 AM

Think the warranty should cover it. Fuel sending units should last longer then a couple of months.

Im pretty sure, im taking it to performance nissan which is a 15 min drive from my house... i only got about 5500k miles on my Z

Ztalker 05-13-2006 08:59 PM

guess what....my pathfinder and new Armada both had defective fuel sending units replaced under warranty..

JasonZ-YA 02-17-2009 05:27 AM

does anyone have a picture of where this fuel sending unit is located....

< --- im off to dig through the factory service manual to try and find it..

Common problem with all Zs. There are threads related to this. I had to bring mine down to have it fixed and its an 07

JEKL 02-17-2009 06:35 AM

I just had mine replaced yesterday on my '06 with 17k miles and it was all under warranty. I didn't have your symptoms, but the service tech asked me about the 3/4 full tank part and said that was another typical problem with the fuel sending unit.

It does not hurt the cars performance at all. Just take it to the dealership, enough said.

My fuel gauge has been doing the same thing for at least a two years, but I didn't really think much of it. I guess I need to get it fixed.
By the way, which warranty is that covered?
My Z is a 2003 with 53,600+ miles. I assume if it's covered under the basic 3/36K I'm out of luck..

why not just fill it ?? Why just $10 a day

Edg_R 02-17-2009 09:11 AM

same problem here

my350isblack 02-17-2009 01:59 PM

does it read 0 after turning hard, like getting on or off a highway? mine only does that if i have a quarter tank and turn fast

ZTMYDUST 03-10-2009 09:16 PM

My '04 with 46k does this. When I fill the tank the gauge goes right to full as it should but sometimes only goes half way. I can have half a tank and it will be on E with the light on. I usually just run it to around 200 miles and fill it back up. Even under heavy driving i've never ran out going 200 miles.

I think my sending unit it floating around or something. :icon14:
