OK what's the top speed of the Z

I was driving on my way to new orleans last weekend and I ended up getting my Z going rather fast on 49. For those of you who aren't familiar with it, it's really straight, flat, and no cops. I have read in all the magazines that our Z has a top speed of 155, but I managed to get the digital speedo up to 162???? at that point i backed off of her.

What's the most any of you guys have gotten your Z's up to???

What's the real top speed since we all know it's not 155.

Thanks,
A to the Z

Weird, it's required by law to be goverened at 155 I believe. The Evo and STi are claimed to be governened at 155 also. Very weird... based on your RPM at 162, you shold get an accurate estimation on how fast it could top out at. By the way, what was it? And everyone else who reads this, doesn't the law for new cars require a governor at 155 or no?

azjimbo Mar 9, 2003 05:42 PM

Z is governed at 155 mph.My estimate is the Z is capable of appox. 165 mph.Pretty impressive in my book.

Ricky Mar 9, 2003 05:46 PM

That's what I thought, but how is it that people are claiming 155+? ******** or what? I've seen a pic of a 156mpg digital display, how is this possible? The fuel should cut off at 155 and not even 1mph over. Is it really goverened?

SKiDaZZLe Mar 9, 2003 05:50 PM

a rough estimate:

3000RPM is about 80MPH in 6th. so 6000RPM would be 160... since it is linear. obviously the redline is a bit higher, so maybe 165-175 or so...

this is theoretical, because wind resistance might stop the Z from reaching this MPH...

Based on Road and Track's calculation, a little help from Ares, and I, we found that the gear ratio is 40mph/1,500rpm, this gives you a ratio of .026 multiply this number by the redline of 6,600rpm, you get a top speed of 176 even. Thanks Ares!

its late tho, and Im tired, so I take no blame if Im wrong.

also that is redline limited top speed, no way in hell will a Z hit that speed, hp and torque drop towards redline, and drag increases, its just not gonna happen.

If that were true, then the Viper, Z06, 911 Turbo, NSX, and other exotics would also have that speed limit.

Fortunately, they don't.

Michael.

more of a standard than a law I think. but none the less the Z IS limited electronicly at 155, tho its more than possible for 156 to happen, hell I can gaurentee a car doing 155 on the speedo is not going 155, at those speeds the speedo becomes exponentially off.

Actually it is not electronically limited, I crossed 155 several times. IF you look in your trusty write ups of the Z in road and track, automobile, and car and driver they all do not state a 155 limit electronically. They merely state the TOP SPEED which could be a lowball from nissan given to the writers. However, they do state the electronic limit on the other cars such as audi A6 4.2. There is no limiter trust me!

What would be the point of my lying out my ass to you guys anyway?

You can also do a search. This topic has been brought up several times. Good luck!

A quick question for you guys. My 4spd automatic gives me 80MPH@3000RPM. I thought that by having a 6spd i'd get 2500RPM@80MPH for really good fuel economy on the expressway...kinda makes me mad since its not really all that good fuel economy. A buddy of mine has an audi a6 in germany..and he's crusing much lower RPMs doing 120-145MPH than what I would be doing with a Z. I wonder if the Z would last on the autobahns in Germany, or was this guy misleading me and that all cars doing 120+MPH will be 4000+RPM?

Thanks

Here's a little tip... Don't buy a Z if you want fuel economy :icon44:

The gear ratio of the Z is such that at 60MPH your rpm is 2250 in 6th gear. So at 6600 rpm, your theoretical top speed is 176mph. Aerodynamics probably wont allow that speed.

Is there any official documentation on the electronically limited speed?

davidv Sep 25, 2005 09:19 PM

Faster than I care to drive on the highway.

usmanasif Sep 25, 2005 10:52 PM

A two year old thread about speed. Oh the irony!

davidgaddy Sep 26, 2005 12:38 PM

I had mine at about 195.

lol!

thats awesome.

someone dug real hard to find this one...

jinsei888 Sep 26, 2005 01:55 PM

ummm...the limiter on the Z is at 160mph, not 155--i.e. BMW M cars. Of course from sheer velocity and momentum your car can wobble to 161-2ish depending on road conditions or whatnot, but electronically, it's limited at 160mph and I'm certain can go beyond that with the rev limiter removed; i.e. Technosquare chip reflashes, etc.

Miko Sep 26, 2005 02:31 PM

I've seen the vid on here of a guy with a turboed Z doing 159...also read that it takes a looooong time to go up from like 140.
I haven't went faster than 75 yet...only had the car for 2 days lol.
WHen i read that we can hit 150+, I thought that at 100mph we'd be at 3K RPM and have plenty of room to go..i was suprised seeing almost 3K at 75mph-ish speed...oh well
