Hypothetical-would dealer buy Z if you're not buying another car there?

I know this might be a dumb question but say I was planning on buying a non-Nissan car and just wanted to sell mine to the dealer would they be able to buy it if it's not a "trade" in for something else?
I don't know if anybody with one of the dealerships could chime in?

Thanks!

im pretty sure any dealership will take any car as a trade in...but im pretty sure they wouldn't just buy your car...

Most dealerships won't, but places like CARMAX and other used car places typically will. Typically this is where I've found to get the best money for cars quickly even when buying a new one. On a side note. If you're thinking about doing this wait until the spring and then do it. Those places operate on what they can sell fast, and during the winter months the Z is a harder sell and they don't want it sitting there. They'll give you more if you wait till its more desirable.

That's a great idea. Wait to sell the car later. That does wonders for a car's value.

+1 wait for spring

I was recently trying to trade in my Z... and the offers were so low that I will still keep her for a while (I have 18k miles). Every dealer said that that will have to keep her for 6 months on the lot - cause no body will buy her in winter.

You can try carmax - cause they have a bigger market - and can easly move cars to states not aftected by winter. Buy still thay will only pay you around trade in value.

Your best bet is to drive this car - and as spring will be approaching list her on ebay/auto trader.

Actually, most dealerships WILL buy cars direct from owners. But I have found CarMax usually offers a little more than dealerships.

I will have to check out Carmax.

This is an absolute worse case scenario. I'm really hoping I don't need to go this route but I want to make sure I have a backup plan if things don't go right.
I know I'd get hosed on selling it to the dealer, just needed to know if I can if I have to.

Any dealer will buy your car. Most, including Carmax, will only offer KBB trade-in value in fair condition.

You can probably sell it to a dealership if the car is in high demand and you are willing to accept a low enough price. I personally would take it to the dealership you were looking to buy the car at and wait until you have agreed on the price and tell them that you need to get $X for your Z so you can get it. Use your trade in as a bargaining tool. Also if you trade it in you will save a few thousand in tax.

Yes. Automotive dealers buy and sell cars.

Thanks guys.
My situation is a really wierd one.....haha
I hope it all works out.

If you don't plan to buy a car from a dealer you should sell it private. You will definatley get more.

Fletch69z Nov 13, 2006 01:53 PM

Here at Enterprise Car Sales in IN we will buy people's trades without them necessarily buying something from us. We usually give somewhere between fair and good KBB value for them. Carmax copied us and they do it too.

Ive had really good luck with car max... I sold 2 cars there this year...

Scion XA with 37000 miles on it they gave me just over 10G's for it!

Jason@Performance Nov 14, 2006 08:05 AM

Also, I know we (Performance NISSAN) will buy a car even if you are not buying one here...

What works out better when you are buying a car, sometimes if you owe more money then they will give you on the car, they apply that negitive ballance to the new car deal...

Example... You owe $20K on your Z, They are willing to give you $18K, You still owe 2K on the Z, they apply that to the new car loan....

Scions have been holding their value really well! Toyota did something right with them, people definitely want to buy them.
