Who here doesn't have a notchy 6MT??

We've all seen the many posts about the grinding or notchy transmissions. Everyone that posts in them has similar issues, especially with the 1-2 upshift when cold.

Some guys have said that the dealers tell them that this is normal. So my question is;

"is it normal?"

fyi, mine is notchy on the 1-2 shift when it's cold. Otherwise it's fine.

sounds like u might wana get a new clutch/flywheel

Eh, its a bit notchy, but its a sports car. Its not supposed to be perfect.

Mine is a little worse and more noticeable in the cold weather. Otherwise, its great.

i still have the stock clutch (with turbo) and i love it....but then again, mines isn't notchy...i live in s. florida

my altima was notchy as well. i think nissan just designs them that way. i'd even say most sports cars are that way to some degree.

plus, all transmissions will be more notchy until they warm up.

my 1-2 is notchy... it always has been and always will be.... it doesn't feel as nice as a LOT of other sports cars... but it's not that big of a deal...

Mine is fine, im used to driving slushbox manuals. The kind where you cant feel the gear change through the shifter.

A friend with an '03 track has the smoothest tranny, no notch at all, none!... To bad my tranny is not like his. lol
I am hoping that the Motyl Gear oil changes this.:)

i came from a hondar... so notchy. ??? well its not smooth like butter like a honda trans. when i first got the car i found it a bit harder to find the gears but now its good, and never any problems grinding

Mid117 Jan 30, 2007 04:07 PM

Mine is notchy and it clatters plenty...doesn't bother me though

Shinin350z Jan 30, 2007 04:14 PM

I was used to my Civic which felt like butter. But I got used to it. Seems a little better with Redline Synthetic.

modzs Jan 30, 2007 05:43 PM

no problems to speak of.

I have visited many used car lots looking for a car for my son. I have had the opportunity to sit in and drive many 350Z's. Compared to mine, some are noticibly less notchy. I totally believe the posters here, that say that they have no problem or gripe. There are some -Z-'s out there, though, that do not shift as well as others.

FALLEN1z Jan 30, 2007 06:41 PM

if it's normal than mine doesnt bother me at all, but it just seems like it's not normal.especially cuz sometimes it is butter smooth and other times it's not, it's all random. i just want a conclusive answer as to whether my trans is fine or not haha..... it's an 03 performance btw

plumpzz Jan 30, 2007 07:07 PM

My original tranny was notchy from the start. The new one i have isnt notchy at all, and infact pops into gear rather than being notchy

Jonathan Allyn Jan 31, 2007 04:06 AM

Mine is notchy from 2-3. Your not alone...

tranceformer95 Jan 31, 2007 04:09 AM

I think I've got one of the late production '05 models, build date is 6/05. It only acts in the cold cold winter days before its warmed up. Even then its only the 1-2 upshift, and its not that bad really. Otherwise it is fine. But i must say that the 5-speed's in my bro's old '90 300zx TT was much smoother, even though it was 14+ years old when i used to drive it.

This is kinda off topic but 07 Z I test drove was notchy as hell compared to my current RSX. I expected it to be this way but what I didnt expect was the Stick to Vibrate so much.

Do the sticks in all the Z's do this ? Even when the car is in neutral or with the clutch not engaged it vibrates.
