the tire feathering/window streaking aren't all that bad. Maybe you won't have that problem, and even if you do, its not very hard to correct. The tranny maybe the one to worry about if you got a 6MT.

I have a 2003 I recently purchased with 72k miles. I put 2500 on myself, no problems yet.
Of course, I did a lot of research first, a lot on this site. I also am fully prepared to replace the transmission on my buck at any time.
I figure if I can get the transmission anywhere near 120k miles then I probably made a very smart decision to go with an 03. People here will tell you that 03s have all kinds of problems, but almost all of them are minor (except the tranny issue, which seems to only affect trannys with low mileage on them.)
I saved well over $5000 going with an 03 instead of an 05. That's $5000 of stuff that can break, or $5000 of stuff that I can put on it (!!!) and still cost the same as an 05 with probably 30,000-40,000 less miles.
You fill in the blanks!

tranny's w/low miles....oh no!
I just picked up my baby the other day. A 2003 Touring 6MT w/only 13.5Kmiles. She was a one owner who REALLY took car of her. All service records and looking just as good as the '07 sitting next to her at the Nissan dealership.
In fact, I was looking for a 05+, but then they didn't have any 6MT's (go figure!). I had a G35 5AT and didn't want that again in my Z.
Long story short, I got a GREAT deal on her, so I bought it. Didn't get the ext. warranty. I figured that the cost didn't justifiy it, plus I still have the powertrain for over a year and I plan on getting a new trany in her during that time. (the 009 is the one to get, right!?)
Anyhow, glad to be a owner and a member of this forum!

Makes for a smart deal..
Another original , preorder owner here . An '03 makes for a smart deal , the problems reported for the most part were minor and if you get one of the ones like many of us got , the only problem I ever had was the window streak ( it's still there , makes me kind of sentimental as a reminder when I first got it ).

im a 03 owner bought it with 20000 it has 55000 had no problems until last week the 3rd gear grind. its in the stealership right now trannie is gettin changed fly wheel and clutch there triyn to charge me for the cltuch whihc im not gunna pay. Clutch is still perfect they could reuse it or pay for a new one if they want to. If your gunna by a 2003 it is all minor stuff few clunks and clicks here and there but make sure u get extended warranty. you dont wanna have to pay out pocket for a trannie jezus i dont know what i would have done if i had no warranty

I have a 2003 with 24k miles on it and it has not had any of the 03' problems some report. It is possible the previous own had the fuel issue and window issues address but he never said anything to me. The transmission has been perfect and never a sticky moment. Lucky? Maybe. I think some over address the problems they had.

Thanks!
Great! My tranny is fine, but I have noticed that she can shift a little rough at times. I'll start my complaining now!

no way....a 2003 fully loaded touring is way better than a 05 with nothing in it..
i called nissan and had them check the vin #...it had already been in the shop for the tire feathering and window streaking problem, so those have been fixed. the lady told me that the fuel hose still needs to be replaced, but its a recall so i dont have to pay anything for it.

Im also in the market for an older z but dont want to thread jack. Im planning on buying an 03 with a 5 yr/100,000 mile warranty but since it is an 03 is there any way to look up how much of the warranty is left on it?
Thanks,
Will

I'm purposely looking at 03s. They're the lightest of the bunch. Besides, I warranty all of my cars after they pass 36k, so I'm not worried about miniscule issues. And since I'm in NYC, my Z is going to be an Auto. I've found a few, just not sure which to settle on. The pricing wars between four dealerships begin now. =)

I have an 03 and I have never had problem 1 with it. It is the most solid car I've ever owned. Granted, not every single car is the same, but I would never trade my car for anything. I work for a dealership and drive home different 06 and 07 cars every night and nothing starts up as consistently as my Z.
