Angry Dealership Being Unscrupulous?

Hey,

I have a 2006 350z GT, I bought it used with 48k on the clock.

The clutch was sticking and I fixed it temporarily by changing out the clutch fluid.

I took it to the Dealership (I don't like the name stealership but I think they are real scammers based on this visit) to clean the Slave and master and do the service+ inspection so that I could transfer my warranty.

Here is what they told me.

Master Cylinder Being ordered /replaced free.

Maybe Slave Cylinder also bad? we will see and that will be replaced free as well if not good.

If neither of those, a new clutch set is needed for 3k! ,

Dome light- $39 (for a bulb??????)

2 front tires needed (I will get those from tire rack and they really do need replacing)

rear brakes and rotors need to be replaced asap

New Air Filter Needed- I think it was $40+ $50 installation (are they kidding)

new Alternator belt needed- $190

Power steering Fluid is dark $115

Coolant Needed. $195

Engine Box filled with leaves. Can be cleaned for $115.

Are these prices normal? Are they serious? Do I really need these items or are they be yanking me?

Dealerships usually charge around $80/hour. That is why the prices are so high. You can do mojority of the work youself and save money.

So... You're out of warranty and you take your car to the service department at a dealership? Why are they replacing the part for free? Is it under a drivetrain warranty?

Find a shop that's local and figure out what's wrong with your clutch.

For a dealer, those prices are nothing unusual. Considering the mileage on the car, some if not all of those things could be a problem, especially if they have not been done in the past. Brakes, air filter, belt, power steering and coolant flush would all be due at this point in the cars life.

Maintain it as you go or be prepared for a big bill at some point in time.

And at least 90% of that is DIY work, if you have any experience at all wrenching on cars.
If you don't, find a friend who does, or pucker up and pay. But shop around for prices if you have to go that route.

DavesZ#3 is my alternate ego from a different dimension. I think he reads my mind.

Dealers are always trying to sell something. Each of these items is addressed here. Preventive maintenance is important. Over maintaining your vehicle is just throwing money away.

a. Study the recommenced maintenance schedule.
b. Learn how to inspect worn items
c. Find a local shop you can trust.

Pay a little now or a lot later. Seems like your being nickel and dimed but your at a dealership. This is what is costs to have other people work on your car.

I didn't see the sphincter valve on the list. Did you ask them how much to change the sphincter valve?

Power Steering top off for $115 would also get the service writer a knee to the face after the nut kick.

$110 an hour, plus $5 for fluid. All for less that 15 seconds of work.

Go to an autoparts store and buy all of the fluids recommended for your car. You can check these each time you fill up and if needed, top them off yourself. If you have access to a low pressure air source, you can spray our your air filter if you have an aftermarket one, or just take a wet rag and wip out the housing and your cleaning issue is solved. As to dome light, your getting ripped off. A new clutch and flywheel can be had for a lot less with instalation elsewhere. Cannot void your warranty as long as whatever parts you have installed do not harm the vehicle, unless your states policy is different. You might want to read up on that. If you think you can follow a manual, you can buy the how to manual for the 350z and do the work yourself and your only out your time. Happy driving.

This reminds of the time when they tried to charge me 60 bucks to replace my windshield wiper. I laughed and literally walked away. That's a fair price for the belts , I would say get that done asap don't want a belt snapping on you. I had a friend replace it for me for 30 dollars I brought him the belts which they were only around 55 bucks.

wait nvm on the price for the belts , my dealership wanted 150 to replace both, belts included. That's a bit high for just one.

Thanks for all the responses, I just thought it was funny that every item that was a supposed problem is a wear item and the only warranty item (car is still under warranty) that theyll replace is the one I brought to their attention.

What do y'all think of these tires?

http://goo.gl/Zgk8

I'm running re-11s in the back and re50s in the front, I want to replace the re50s with the above tire rack tire re760 , they are cheaper and have double the tread wear rating but I don't want to give up performance! Is it a bad idea to mix those with my RE11 in the rear?

I don't have my dealership do anything but wash my car. The rest I do (brakes) or pay to have done (clutch). I say the clutch kit is laughable too cuz I can get a clutch *and* lightened flywheel from ACT installed for half that. But these are just my views...if something breaks I replace it with aftermarket.

Why blame the original owner? Those are all things that should be checked out before you buy the car, not after. And keep in mind - dealers have certainly been known to recommend services which are not needed.
