Turn on the Z, it's definitely 10 degrees outside
 

Damn this weather sucks! I know I probably cant even complain THAT much, and I know there are people dealing with colder...but still! Last nite I was driving to a friend's house around 11pm, and I thought it was cold then -- 22 degrees. Yeah right, I wake up this morning very early to get home (6am is early for a college student), and the on-screen temp gauge is saying 10 freaking degrees! Coldest I've ever seen it, and probably coldest weather I've ever been in I think:(

Okay but aside from this being a rant about me not liking sub-freezing weather, I noticed the car making some different sounds this morning while driving. Obviously I know the transmission and brakes and everything need a little bit of driving to warm up some, but there was almost a "whirring" sound when accelerating first 10 minutes or so of driving. I've driven in below 30degrees weather before and never heard this before. Anyone else get this or know what that sound might have been?

I took the car out yesterday in 8 degree temperatures. For whatever reason, it was really noisy. I couldn't tell if it was the tranny or the wheels, definitely not the engine, but something just didn't sound right. As the car warmed up, and as the tires did too, it got a little better.

I think it was the tires.

On new tires, the Z can do cold weather. On tires with 16,000 miles one them, I probably wouldn't recommend it.

The temp gague on my car was at zero degrees when I left for work at 7:30 yesterday morning...I can't bring myself to look at where it might be right now.

Mine is at 0 right now.

Z's are not happy in the cold. My car does not want to start easily and the tires do not stick for the first 45 or so minutes of driving. I just do insane burnouts outside my house to warm them up now.

The "wirring" sound is just the basic sound of the car warming up. Let it warm up for a few mins, and you'll notice that the sound goes away. Its normal, at least to my knowledge

i would prefer warmer weather but here in chicago...my z is kicken @ss!~ lol...it's a bit louder but when it warms up it's great. man it's like free "freeze cold air intake!"just the the power to the ground is wacky!....it's grandpa mode..or in other words "pimp mode"=)

Damn, zero degrees. Mine was on 6 and I thought that hurt a lot (I have to walk a few houses over to get to my car).

I had the same alarming noises coming from mine too. It started OK and I let it warm up for a few minutes anyway. But when I started to roll, it sounded like the break was dragging. I figured it was the differential. The tires also sounded like I had run through some fresh tar on a hot Summer day. It was clicking like I had some rocks in the tread. Couldn't figure ou how anything could be sticking to it though. I'm pretty sure I was on dry pavement.

It all went away after a while, but it took a good 10 miles of easy driving to get near operating temp.

Isn't it amazing how you car can be right back to cold about 10 minutes after you shut it down? I had to re warm it every time I went out!

Winter sucks!

i mentioned this in another thread...friday night my boys and i were drivin all over,we went from nassau to queens and back and drove aroudn soem more...id say about 4 hours non stop...i got home,my washer fluid was ICE (i dont think thats supposed to happen), i stuck my finger in the tanka nd it was ice. also my engine was cold,not even a little bit warm.

All cold cars are a bit louder while they warm up.

i heard something close to the rear tires, and the transmission seems harder to shift when its cold, after 5-10 mins it goes back to normal. has anyone noticed how fast the z engine warms up?

I went out for breakfast this morning and my temp guage said 72 degrees.

damn I love AZ!

Went out to warm up the Z this afternoon and the gague said 18 degrees...Time to pull out the Bermudas, fire up the Margarita blender and put on the Buffett CD. ;)

last night when i started my z (5 degrees) it made the WORST NOISE!!...it sounded exactly like what happens when you grind a gear!!! the car is sooo loud driving around....the tire roar was almost unbearable, i had to pull over because i thought i had a flat or something!!! please tell me you guys have had a similar sound once or twice before when you started up the car in cold weather....

Definitely man. That's pretty much exactly what happened with me, but I know when it happened for me I barely warmed up my Z. But I fell you, it was horrible :(

That "whirring" sound? Is it when you first start driving or when you are sitting still. Mine does that when I first start driving on real cold mornings. It sounds like wind is swirling outside or something. I tried taking it to the dealer, but by the time I got there it was gone.

Your right but when it was in the teens an 20's last week here in DFW my cars started making noises I never heard not lonly drivetrain. Cold weather brings out the worst in cars and the squeaks and rattles wake up from their sleep!:eek:

That is very very bad for your rear when it isnt warmed up. And it takes a LONG time for your rear to warm up in this weather

engines and trannies make a lot of noise when it is cold.
think about it. the oil is damn cold, sitting in the bottom of the pan or the tranny. it takes time for that to get moving around and warmed up, then the noises will disappear.

what really sucks is having a car with a stand alone (usually takes a bit more to start up) + -5 deg outside. my poor mr2. the tranny also would get pretty hard to shift. once it reaches operating temps, it should be fine.

and i was back in chicago this weeked. damn cold. now i am happy to be back in the springs, where it is at least 50 out right now. but then i get to head to LA where it is 70, but then back to sacremento on tues where it is colder.
bah.

oh well, only a couple more months of this cold.
