If you are using the trip computer to tell you that, you could be highly mistaken, which is why I asked earlier which method you were using. But if you were not using the fill the tank, drive till empty, fill again and divide mileage by gallons, then I guess no point in doing it now. I will say the Sea Foam will NOT net you that great an increase, don't care how bad the fuel system was. But as long as you're now happy, great.

Perfz,

So far, I've only done the gauge so I do realize it's only an approximation. Tomorrow I'l be on the hwy and am sure I'll see numbers in the 20s again (haven't seen that for a long time). Engine feels a bit stronger a bit smoother. It'll be a while before I do some long distance and will definitely do the tank/fill-up method then.

Thanks,

Hank

You know you can get your fuel system cleaned at almost any oil change place for over $100 cheaper than the dealer. i recently had mine cleaned it was $80 at a Time It Lube, not sure if you guys have one of those but I would personally look into something like that. Seafoam would not net you a 6+mpg gain.

The gauge is only good for long distances - as long as you never reset it, it will give you a pretty close average.. Gong out on the highway and seeing it go to 20's does not tell you anything at all. And if the gauge was showing you at 13.9 while driving in heavy traffic in the city, well that doesn't tell you anything at all either. Average mileage over the long haul, under all types of driving conditions, is all that matters.

Realistically my combined highway/city driving is averaging 17.9 mpg up from 13.9. So I'm pleased with approximately the additional 4 mpg change.

At 93k I'm definitely due. What are the original plugs NGK? I suppose I'd get the same type that came with the car originally unless anyone has a better idea. Is there any one NGK that outlasts/outperforms another. What number are the original ones?

I heard it rumored that the plugs should be changed at 5 years regardless of mileage. Supposedly there is some sort of metallurgic "bonding" (for lack of a better description). I certainly don't want to strip anything in the process. Anyone have any information/recommendation regarding this?

Thanks,

Hank

Any of you know Bryan, the guy who runs ZdayZ? He had unlimited dyno time one weekend and tried four different sets of plugs, from cheap to stock NGK's Difference on the dyno, according to him, was less than 2 hp swing in either direction. Food for thought?

Thanks for hanging with me PerfZ. I think these are OEM for my 2004 and since they have lasted for 93k, and especially since your friend found no significant hp gain, I see no reason to experiment.

Won't disagree - i went with NGK's last two times myself. Just found Bryan's experience interesting and he has forgotten more about cars than most of us will ever know.
