Post Questions about the Z

Hello, I had a couple questions about my nissan 350Z..

I bought it about 3 months ago, and i went to a muffler place to get it checked out because there is a rattle noise..
I was told that I wont be able to pass emissions because I'm missing my catalytic converter, and I have headers in. Is this true?

Another thing.. I want to add some noise to it. Nothing too loud like straight pipes, but just a nice deep sound, nothing to expensive.

Not sure if this post is in the right place because I'm new to the forums!

Thanks!

I don't know the emission laws in IL but headers should have nothing to do with it. Also, you aren't missing a catalytic converter otherwise a rattle noise would be the least your problems. There's a possibility he means the mesh inside your catalytic converter has broken apart (which may cause your rattle noise) but he would have to confirm this by taking it off. Sounds like you need to take it to another shop.

I suspect that a muffler shop would know if the catalytic converters had been removed from the car. I'm not familiar with Illinois emission laws but I suspect they are similar to all other states. Catalytic converters are required by federal law and enforced by the states. I'm certain you will fail the emission test if your car does not have catalytic converters installed.

If you bought the car from a dealer, I would return there and insist they get the car in compliance with the state emission regulations. I bought a Mazda Miata from a dealer about 4 years ago and it didn't have a catalytic converter and the check engine light had been removed. Obviously, the car failed the emission test. I took the car back to the dealer along with the failure notice and they installed a new catalytic converter and replaced the check engine light. If you bought the car from an individual, you may be out of luck.

unless the car has after market "long tube" headers the cats should be there unless it has test pipes on it...

first things first look under your car to see if you have test pipes or cats on there.

if you have test pipes, take them off.

if you dont, you might have to get a new converter (aftermarket upgrade time!)

next thing, headers wont cause you to fail a emissions test.

if you bought it from a dealer they were supposed to run a smog check by law before transfering the car to you,

if you got it from an individual your SOL. either way it goes there are some repairs to be made.

Wow, this really helped! Actually I just called the dealer where I bought it from and they apologized and stuff, so they said they would call me back on details to get it fixed. Hopefully it actually happens! But yeah there is no sensor for the catalytic.. and also my air bag sensor is on.. so thats not good.

Thanks a lot!

You might want to take the car to some shop you trust and have them go over everything. If you have these problems and the dealer sold you the car that way, there very well may be more.

Good luck.

There is no emission in Illinois but its illegal to drive without a catalytic converter. I don't have one on mine. Car is low enough that they can't see it.

I believe certain parts of Illinois have emission inspections. Here is a link to the website explaining IL emission testing.

The stock pipes and muffler do that.
