Most likely: needs a reset. Both this site and YouTube have walk throughs on how to do this.
Possible: the motor is struggling to overcome resistance on the way up. When this happens, the motor thinks it has hit an object, and rolls back to prevent damage to motor/window. In this case, the motor is usually worn, and heading towards replacement.
Your scenario sounds like the former, just going by loose description.

geomark... I have had the same situation. The previous recommendation is spot on. That being said, a reset will last maybe 2 weeks then it reverts back to rolling back down. That is good to hold you until you get a new one. But yes there are tutorials on resetting it. I have used the one on YouTube. Good luck man
