Noise Violation?

So my state laws (MA) are very strict about car modding. I was just wondering how likely it is for those of you living in states with laws on modified exhausts, to get pulled over for being too loud.

I live in Florida. We don't have any stupid laws for loudness and we also don't have any emission test. Florida is Mod friendly.

It isn’t just State laws that can be a problem for owners of modified vehicles. There are municipalities enforcing their own noise ordinances (and, anywhere from mufflers to SubW’s in car sound systems). Fargo in North Dakota is an example, and the ND State Patrol will enforce this on the i94 Expressway running through town.

Stay with a quite system for those states.

I use to have a "fart can" on my del sol when I was in highshool and police always pulled me over here in NY . On my 350z I went with the Megan oe-rs exhaust and it adds a minimal growl but it is surprisingly quiet for a aftermarket exhaust . This may be a good way to go for you
You can only really hear it go when you step on it but just at idle it's quiet

livinglegend 06-04-2013 07:19 PM

I think it all depends on A) the officer's disposition when you cross paths with him/her. and B) how the vehicle sounds (nice quality loud exhaust or retarded straight pipe loud. That may sound crazy but I swear it holds true in my area. Never been pulled over in my pretty loud G35, and my roommate has never been pulled over in his DAMN loud M5. But both these cars sound very nice. Not even a mention by an officer at traffic stops for other reasons. never seen anyone else with a loud but quality sounding car get ticketed either. Always the guys with the rapping hillbilly trucks and fart can civics. Its kind of funny actually.

350Z Project X 06-04-2013 10:27 PM

I live here in Socal and just last week some a gay a** civic pulled over with a fart can, but cops are kinda just getting tired of it because EVERY SINGLE damn civic or integra has some stupid weld/bolt on autozone exhaust. I have noticed though since the warmer weather 5X more cops out, and thats why I have an Escort Smart Radar now for my lead foot :D

JCITY 06-05-2013 03:20 AM

As already mentioned,it depends on the area.
Most states and municipalities have a "noise nuisance" law on the books.
However, enforcement is inconsistent except in towns that clamp down.
Lately in my area(Georgia),I've seen an increase in guys getting pulled over
for "noise",exhaust or music. This is a ruse to do a drug check. They are
finding a lot of weed. The thing that kills me in the south is the pickup truck
guys.Standard practice is to buy a new truck from a dealership,go DIRECTLY
to the muffler shop to slap on some Flowmasters. The objective is its gotta
sound like a truck.
Most quality exhaust systems sound rather quiet at idle or,low rev.
WOT,they come to life!

MA can give you a ticket if the exhaust is modified in any way, doesn't have to be loud or not. I got a ticket when I had my agency power exhaust and the cop said he pulled me over because the exhaust looked loud and then proceeded to tell me any modifications to the exhaust can warrant a ticket. It's part of the reason I got my ark exhaust now, less flashy and doesn't draw as much attention.

350zchad 06-05-2013 04:16 AM

who cares... pay to play, brah!

Z33Garage 06-05-2013 05:13 AM

Florida is pretty lax on noise violations. Both in Miami and Orlando, my car isnt stupid loud but its not stock either and I have gotten thumbs up by cops (2 of em) :/

Jah70 06-05-2013 06:27 AM

It's such a double standard in some states. Those guys with the gay harleys should have the same penalties as the kids in the stupid riced out civics because their both annoyingly loud and obnoxious. I've also noticed cops in my state usually pull over over tuners and exotics with modified exhaust but they leave domestics and harleys alone. Such a fair and equal nation we live in.:icon14:

Calidank223 06-05-2013 07:48 AM

I live in California, and it's really dependent on the area you are in.

Where I am no cops really care, however if you go to another city they will ticket you for a modified exhaust even if its the same noise level as stock.

Here they can A ticket you for modifying your exhaust in anyway

or B having an exhaust louder than 95db

iideadeyeii 06-05-2013 09:11 AM

I've got pulled over in MA for having a too loud exhaust on my geo metro(it was stock with no leaks and in perfect working condition) what he was hearing was my intake at WOT on the highway as I struggled to keep it at highway speeds.
My 350z has never been pulled over in MA for no cats and an injen exhaust.
I've been pulled over for an open downpipe in MA on a kia sephia.
I've been pulled over for just a straight through muffler on a kia rio.

None of these I got tickets for

Ok, but how did u pass insection with a modified exhaust?

iideadeyeii 06-05-2013 10:19 AM

Had an o2 bung extender on my o2 sensors. I'm turbo now and do not have the extender and I'm still not throwing any codes

Gumby Gone Wild 06-05-2013 04:30 PM

I daily drive my straight piped sti and am yet to be stopped. I live in a smaller town where the police aren't exactly friendly, drive past the station every morning and have had numerous cruisers behind me, with no issues to date.

I've also got a Z with an aftermarket Greddy Ti-C (without the silencers) exhaust, the sti has to be at least twice as loud as the Z. As others have said it obviously depends on the officer, but, long story short I think you should be alright.

Z-Crazy 06-05-2013 05:54 PM

I used to live in boston. I had M3 at the time and was very loud. Never got pulled over.

Try not to get a very flashy exhaust with blue tips or anything that looks aftermarket from far.

smokescreen 06-06-2013 06:44 AM

here in va the law states "No person shall drive and no owner of a motor vehicle shall permit or allow the operation of any vehicle on a highway unless it is equipped with an exhaust system of a type installed as standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use on the particular vehicle as standard factory equipment, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise. An exhaust system shall not be deemed to prevent excessive or unusual noise if it permits the escape of noise in excess of that permitted by the standard factory equipment exhaust system of private passenger motor vehicles or trucks of standard make."

but i haven't been hassled for my exhaust. (test pipes back) but i would never rule out that i could be pulled over for it. the cops around here are pretty laid back on it seeing as they have more serious offenses to tend to, but there's always that one who's really bored and having a bad day.

They can pretty much ticket you for farting in the wrong direction in CA.:icon17:
