Mod's and warranties
 

Hey all...
With the numbers of people on this forum that have done some form of modification to their Z's to increase performance or enhance looks, I was wondering about the concern for voiding the warranty. What kind of things can you do to a Z and not void your warranty? I just paid cash for my '04 Track and that was a hell of a check to write to go out and void the warranty to gain a few extra HP.


So....What are the boundaries here, or is the general philosophy one of "screw the warranty, I'm mod'ing my car" (in which case, it must be nice to have deep enough pockets to not worry about that engine going bad while the car WOULD have been under warranty).

I see so many nice (probably relatively safe) aftermarket parts for the car that I'd be interested in, just not at the cost of a warranty which is there to protect my investment (if only for the first couple of years.)

This is the reply that I got from Peptidbond (friend, fellow Z owner & forum member) when I asked about replacing my headers.

"As for your warranty, the federal Magnusson Moss act has you protected. The act essentially states that individuals are free to work on their cars without the loss of warranty. The dealer must prove whatever work was done caused the issue at hand. For example, lets say your windows stop working. To keep from covering the claim, the dealer would need to prove the CAI or headers caused to problem. Obviously, this is impossible. However, you have lost coverage on your intake, MAF sensor (oiled filters on CAIs can foul the MAF sensor), headers, exhaust, cats, and header gasket (assuming you have installed what you plan)."
