2007 350Z oil consumption issues??
Hi, I am considering the purchase of a 2007 350Z Roadster with 124 K miles. One lady owner since new and serviced at the same dealership throughout. A clean Carfax with 33 service entrys (oil changes etc) with a new manual transmission installed at 57 K miles. Car looks and drives like new but when I checked the oil it was down about 1/2 quart. The salesman indicated that the oil was changed when the car was received about 2 weeks prior. (The previous owner traded it for a new 2017 370Z.)
I have read about oil consumption issues with the 2004-2006 350Z's and wonder with the new engine in the 2007 + models if the problem persists?
Thanks

No. The VQ35DE(Rev-UP) engine used from 2005(Anniversary Edition only) - 2006 is the engine known to burn the most oil.. Some Rev-Ups will burn an excessive amount of oil, and some won't. It's really hit or miss. The 2007+ VQ35HR engine is notorious for developing low oil pressure problems over time, however, as a result of a compromised/worn out paper thin Oil Galley Gasket.. Again, not a definite. Just a hit or miss. This typically develops over time by using heavier than recommended oil weights resulting in higher pressures.
- I suggest you do some exploring. Get the car up in the air so that you can familiarize yourself with the layout, and at the same time inspect the underside of the engine for oil leaks.

I haven't decided on it yet.
If I do I will be trading in my 2003 MX-5 with about the same 127K mileage. Nissan dealer is asking $10,850. I'm thinking My Miata and $8K OTD.

10,850 seems a bit high for the Z.

Missed that. I'm sure it been cleaned but could you see any soot on the tailpipes or blue smoke? While the low oil doesn't give me a great feeling about the engin it's also possible they didn't add oil correctly. If they added 4.5 quarts then started the car it could read 5 quarts as the oil pump seems to foam with a new filter and raise the oil level reading.

Just did a quick spot check and found that dealers are asking that price even around here where there are Z's for sale everywhere. Would guess that there are probably fewer in the W VA area where OP is so supply and demand might suggest they can ask that price.
For perspective, I paid just about $10k for my '07 ZR - which I then sold for $13k to a friend with a set of wheels/new tires on it valued at about $1200 give/take, and a brand new differential bushing... not a cheap job at pro shop. (So no, I really didn't profit off of my friend, or not much anyhow.)
But difference is my car only had about 60k on the clock so just consider this datapoint in your decision.

Well, we will see.
Going to the dealer tomorrow with cash in hand. My top is $7250 with my Miata in trade OTD. I'm sure they will want more though. I will look elsewhere if they do. There are so many around the WV/Virginia for $7 - 9K and I get to keep my MX-5.
I did the Kelly Blue book thing and found 2007 350Z 124K miles in very good condition for this area is Dealer "Fair price" $8930
My 2003 Miata 127K miles in good condition "Trade value" is $3045. I figured $294 sales tax (WV) and $350 "Dealer processing."

Honestly, for that money why not go to JDM Classics in Virginia and get yourself a nice import.
The 350z is only gonna depreciate in value, which is sad to say. I got my 07 san marino blue HR Enthusiast 1 owner for 5500 (granted it had 148k miles due to his 50 mile commute via nj turnpike).

One thing to note, the dip sticks on our Z's are sometimes misleading. A mechanic friend of mine accidentally added a full 6 quarts during an oil change, based on an inaccurate dipstick reading. It's best to check the oil level after the car is at rest for a while. As far as the price for that Z, well there are much lower mile HR Roadsters out there around the same price you're looking at. Check the internet classifieds. I picked up my 08 ZR with 27 k for 17k two years ago. The car was near perfect, and was fully loaded with gps as well. Since then, I've gone full bolt on and lots of other things as well. If you choose to buy that particular car, check the condition of the top, and top motor functions. Also, feel the clutch pedal firmness, as the concentric slave cylinder is located internally, and the tranny must be dropped to change. These two things cause problems on our Z's that if detected early, can save you $$$ from the dealer, before you sign on the line. Good lick.

Well, the deal is done......See my "Joined the Club" thread.
I did not get the deal I wanted, but I got the car I wanted. (Roadster, color, interior, transmission, accessories). I could have done better financially with a private sale but then I would have had to sell my Miata myself, and I hate that adventure.
Right now the car has no vices. Love it. Needs nothing. Just have to set the Homelink and I'm there. Top works fine even in cool 40's/50's weather. From now on it will lead a pampered life, garage, no rain. Got Honda's and MG's for that. Top will go down in May and stay down until November.
Transmission was replaced at the 57K mark and the interior shows no sign of wear so evident in these.
